Ian Wright

Newton-le-Willows Sexual Abuser

May 2018 “Warped” paedo who moaned his sentence was too long given EXTRA jail time by judge A “warped” paedophile who tried to rape an eight-year-old girl has been handed extra jail time by a top judge. Ian Wright, 57, committed a series of traumatising sex attacks against eight-year-old and 13-year-old girls decades ago. He evaded justice for many years until one of the victims told her story to her mother, who alerted the police. Wright, of Crow’s Lane East, Newton-le-Willows, was jailed for 12 years, with a one-year extended licence period, at Liverpool Crown Court in October last year. He was convicted of two counts of attempted rape, nine of indecent assault and four of indecency with a child. Today his lawyers argued that his sentence was too harsh and ought to be cut. But Judge Sarah Munro QC, sitting at London’s Criminal Appeal Court, threw out his challenge. Instead, she took the rare step of ordering Wright to serve six extra weeks behind bars as a punishment for wasting the court’s time. She said Wright, who showed no remorse, had “an entrenched, warped, thought process, justifying to himself that all he had done was acceptable”. His victims had suffered badly from what he did to them and the younger girl had been left with severe psychological damage. Wright’s lawyers argued that he ought to have got a lighter sentence, because he had kept his nose clean for years since the abuse. But the judge said: “Even though he had not committed an offence for decades, he remained a danger to children. “It is not reasonably arguable that the 12-year custodial term, or the one-year extended licence, were manifestly excessive or wrong in principle.” “This application is entirely without merit,” said the judge, adding six weeks onto the jail time Wright will serve. November 2017 “Opportunistic” paedophile locked up for jailed 12 years after sneaking into girls’ bedrooms A paedophile whose perverted behaviour came back to haunt him two decades later was locked up for 12 years. Ian Wright abused two girls, one when she was eight or nine and another when she was 13, at a property in Warrington. The court heard that Wright, 56, took opportunities to sneak into their bedrooms, where he would carry out the depraved attacks, which involved the attempted rape of the younger child. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the victim has suffered “severe psychological harm” and now suffers from anxiety, depression and stress and had only finally revealed her ordeal at Wright’s hands to police last year. Wright, of Crow Lane East, Newton-le-willows denied sexually abusing the two girls but a jury found him guilty of 19 offences. Jailing Wright, Judge Anil Murray pointed out that the defendant has previous convictions for sexually abusing children. He said: “I am sure you have a sexual interest in children and you have over the years acted on that interest and committed sexual offences.” “I saw you give evidence and you have a warped thought processes and this is entrenched. “Everything you did and have done you justified to yourself as acceptable. “Even though you have not committed any sexual offences for 20 years you remain a risk to children. “When opportunity has presented itself in the past you have taken it.”   Wright has three previous convictions between 1977 and 1997 for indecently assaulting two girls aged seven and nine and having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old. Judge Murray ruled that Wright was an offender of particular concern and imposed an extra year’s extended licence meaning he will only be released when the Parole Board consider it safe. Judge Murray ordered Wright to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and also imposed a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
