PAUL MARSH FROM SOUTHEND SENTENCED FOR SIX-YEAR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRLS IN CANVEY
In a case that has shocked the local community, Paul Marsh, a 60-year-old resident of Southend, was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing two young girls over a period of six years. The offences took place on Canvey Island, where Marsh committed these heinous acts between August 1976 and December 1983.Marsh’s arrest and subsequent conviction came after one of the victims, who had kept silent for many years, finally decided to come forward and contact the police last year. This revelation prompted a thorough investigation by law enforcement officers, leading to Marsh’s eventual apprehension and court proceedings.
During the sentencing at Basildon Crown Court, Deputy Circuit Judge Gareth Davies expressed his grave concern over the severity of the crimes. He stated, “I have to say it is difficult to contemplate a more serious incident of indecent assault. I have considered the seriousness of what you have done. There were two children involved which is an aggravating feature and the abuse occurred for approximately six years. I have no doubt that these offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified.”
Throughout the police interviews, Marsh repeatedly denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence. However, when he appeared before Basildon Magistrates’ Court last month, he changed his plea and admitted to nine counts of indecent assault. As part of his sentence, Marsh was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for a period of ten years, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
Details of the case highlight the importance of vigilance and the need for victims to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed. The community in Southend and Canvey remains deeply affected by this case, which underscores the long-lasting impact of such abuse and the importance of justice for the victims involved.
