GARRETT MOON SENTENCED IN GUERNSEY FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT PARTY

In a case that has drawn significant attention within the community of Guernsey, Garrett Moon, a 22-year-old man from St Julian’s House in St Peter Port, has been convicted and sentenced for engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor. The incident occurred on the night of August 16, following a social gathering where alcohol and prescription drugs were consumed, leading to a tragic and criminal breach of trust.

According to court records, Moon had established contact with the young girl through the popular social networking platform Facebook approximately two weeks prior to the incident. During their online interactions, the girl explicitly disclosed her age as 14, and Moon was aware of her age at the time. Despite this knowledge, he proceeded to meet her in person at the party, where the situation escalated.

On the night of the offence, Moon admitted to having engaged in sexual activity with the girl. Court proceedings revealed that he had combined alcohol with prescription medication, which he himself described as being ‘wrecked’ during the incident. This intoxication appeared to impair his judgment, but it did not absolve him of responsibility.

Advocate Clare Tee, representing Moon, emphasized that her client had no prior convictions of a similar nature. She argued that the best course of action for the protection of the public would be a carefully monitored period of supervision rather than immediate imprisonment. She proposed that a suspended sentence coupled with a supervision order could serve both punitive and rehabilitative purposes.

However, Judge Philip Robey, presiding over the case, pointed out that Moon had previously served time in prison three times, though none for sexual offences. The judge clarified that his sentencing was based on the fact that the sexual act was consensual, but he emphasized that Moon had taken advantage of the girl’s intoxicated state. The judge remarked that Moon’s own admission of being ‘wrecked’ did not mitigate the seriousness of his actions.

Ultimately, Judge Robey concluded that imprisonment was the only appropriate punishment for the crime. He sentenced Moon to seven months in prison and additionally imposed an extended sentence license of 17 months. This extended license means that upon his release, Moon will remain under supervision to monitor his conduct and prevent further offences, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the severity of the offence committed in Guernsey.
