FREDERICK OLUSINA SHOCKS SOUTHAMPTON WITH ILLEGAL SEX CRIME INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL

In a case that has sparked concern and debate over the adequacy of current legislation, Frederick Olusina, a 36-year-old software engineer from Southampton, was brought before Southampton Crown Court to face serious allegations of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor. The incident, which unfolded over a period of 15 months, involved a teenage girl from Portsmouth, and has highlighted the limitations faced by the judiciary in delivering harsher punishments due to existing legal constraints.

Olusina admitted to having sexual relations with the 14-year-old girl after they initially connected through an internet chatroom aimed at teenagers. The court proceedings revealed that Olusina had initially misrepresented his age, claiming to be 17 when he first communicated with her. The girl, described as vulnerable and going through a difficult time at home following her parents' divorce, was reportedly lured into a relationship that escalated over several months.

The court heard that the girl and Olusina continued their communication through online messaging and mobile texts, which eventually led to a face-to-face meeting. The meeting took place in Fareham, near Portsmouth, on June 30. Olusina then took her to his residence on Tindale Road in Southampton, where the alleged sexual encounters occurred. During the night, Olusina engaged in sexual activity with the girl on two separate occasions, an act that the court described as being under his control.

Prosecutor Charles Thomas detailed the events, emphasizing the girl’s vulnerability and her feelings of being overpowered. He stated, “The girl said he seemed to be in control and she felt she was no match for him, she said she just did what he said.”

Judge Christopher Leigh, presiding over the case, expressed his frustration with the legal limitations that prevented him from imposing a more severe sentence. He stated, “I want to pass a ‘harsher’ sentence on Frederick Olusina, but I am constrained by what parliament allows me to consider.”

Olusina pleaded guilty to two charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, and on Thursday, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for each charge, to run concurrently. Additionally, the court ordered him to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years following his release from incarceration.

As the case concluded, the court’s decision underscored the ongoing challenges faced by the justice system in addressing crimes involving minors and online grooming, especially when legal frameworks limit the severity of penalties that can be handed down. The case has left many questioning whether current laws are sufficient to protect vulnerable young people from predatory behavior in the digital age.
