2012: FATHER JAILED FOR ‘CRUEL’ CHILD PUNISHMENTS
A judge sentenced a 44-year-old man from Halliwell to five years and three months in prison after he admitted to subjecting his children to severe punishments that, according to court proceedings, would be considered harsh even in wartime interrogations. The defendant confessed to inflicting a series of abusive acts on his wife and three children over a period from 1999 to 2011, often for minor infractions such as spilling salt.
During the sentencing, Judge Maureen Roddy remarked that some of the defendant’s actions, if used in military interrogations, would be widely condemned, emphasizing that these were acts committed within a family context.
Evidence presented in Manchester Crown Court detailed instances where he restrained his daughters by tying them up and covering their heads when they refused to confess to spilling salt.
When the children’s mother attempted to intervene, he physically assaulted her by tearing off her nightdress and beating her.
On one occasion, he hung a daughter upside down from a chandelier and struck her with a roll of cling film, which he referred to as his preferred weapon.
He also dislocated a daughter’s arm by roughly placing her in a cot and bit another girl’s arm before hitting her with cling film.
When the girl’s bite marks were noticed, he falsely attributed them to another child.
There was also an incident where his seven-year-old son was so frightened by his father’s rage during a toy car episode that he wet himself.
Court records indicated that over a decade ago, he attacked his pregnant wife with a rolling pin, an assault that preceded her miscarriage the following day, though no medical link was established.
The charge of actual bodily harm involved a separate incident where his wife received a black eye during an assault witnessed by their children.
Defense lawyer Farrhat Arshad claimed the man believed his violent actions were motivated by love and discipline.
The judge highlighted that the defendant, who cannot speak English fluently, will likely feel incarceration more acutely.
The man pleaded guilty to eight counts of child cruelty, assaulting a woman, assaulting a teenage girl, and causing actual bodily harm to his wife.
Due to legal restrictions, the children’s identities have not been disclosed, and the court rejected an application to remove reporting restrictions.
