EDWIN BOUGOURD SENTENCED IN GUERNSEY FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST 10-YEAR-OLD BOY
In December 2008, the Royal Court in Guernsey handed down a nine-month prison sentence to Edwin Bougourd, a 61-year-old man found guilty of serious sexual offences involving a young boy. The court heard that Bougourd had engaged in two separate acts of sexual misconduct against a 10-year-old boy, which had taken place over a span of two years, beginning in April 1991.Prosecutor Crown Advocate Graeme McKerrel detailed that the offences occurred during a period when Bougourd was approximately 45 years old and residing at a property known as Barnesfield, located on Grand Fort Road in St Sampson’s. This property has since been demolished. The victim, who was a young boy at the time, described the residence as a “shack,” indicating it was a modest and perhaps neglected dwelling.
The young complainant frequently visited the home of a friend of a similar age, and Bougourd, who was known to be friendly with the family, also spent time there. Over time, Bougourd developed a friendship with the boy and his friend, often taking them fishing, which was a common activity they enjoyed together. However, the court was informed that the criminal acts occurred during times when the boy was alone at Bougourd’s residence, which marked the moments when the offences took place.
Advocate Chris Green, representing Bougourd, stated that his client had pleaded guilty to the charges at the earliest opportunity, thereby avoiding the need for the young victim to testify in court. It was also noted that the offending did not result in any physical injury to the boy, though the emotional and psychological impact of such acts remains significant.
The court’s decision reflects the gravity of the offences committed by Bougourd, and the nine-month sentence underscores the seriousness with which the judicial system in Guernsey treats sexual misconduct involving minors. The case highlights ongoing concerns about safeguarding children and the importance of holding offenders accountable, regardless of their age or the passage of time since the offences occurred.
