EDWARD ALLEN FROM LIMAVADY SENTENCED TO SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGER
In a recent court ruling at Derry Magistrate’s Court, Edward Allen, a resident of Glenmore Gardens in Limavady, has been legally mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years following his conviction for a sexual assault involving a 14-year-old girl. The incident in question occurred after a contest held in Derry, where Allen was accused of kissing the young girl inappropriately. The court proceedings revealed that Allen, aged 48, had initially denied the charge of sexual assault, which was brought against him on May 20 of the previous year.
During the trial, defense counsel Nicola Rowntree expressed her client’s emotional distress over the allegations and the subsequent conviction. She stated that Allen had found the entire process very challenging and that he had been “affected greatly” by the accusations and the court’s decision.
Ms. Rowntree further conveyed that her client now accepts the court’s findings and is willing to cooperate with probation services if the judge deems such engagement appropriate. Her comments appeared to reflect a degree of remorse or acceptance of responsibility.
District Judge Barney McElholm delivered the verdict, opting to suspend a two-month jail sentence for a period of two years. In addition to the suspended sentence, Allen was ordered to pay £500 in compensation to the victim. The judge also mandated that Allen sign the sex offenders register for a duration of seven years, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense and the need for ongoing monitoring and public safety measures.
