JAMES MCKERGAN FROM CO DERRY AND LIMAVADY SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR HISTORIC SEX OFFENSES

In a case that has spanned decades and brought to light long-standing allegations, James McKergan, a 60-year-old man residing in Alexander Crescent, Limavady, Co Derry, has been sentenced to a prison term of seven years. The conviction stems from serious charges related to sexual offenses committed over 30 years ago, involving a young girl and her two sisters.

McKergan was found guilty in June of multiple counts, including the rape and indecent assault of one girl, as well as indecent assault and gross indecency involving her two sisters. The crimes are alleged to have taken place between January 1970 and December 1971, a period during which the victims were aged between seven and ten years old.

Despite the conviction, McKergan continues to deny the allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings. Nevertheless, the court's judgment reflects the severity of the offenses and the impact on the victims.

As part of his sentencing, McKergan has been ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further offenses. Additionally, he has been sentenced to serve 18 months on probation following his release from prison, ensuring ongoing supervision and support.
