DOUGLAS HAMMERSLEY'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN AYLESBURY AND SURREY: CENTENARIAN PAEDOPHILE AVOIDS JAIL

In a case that has spanned decades and shocked the local communities, Douglas Hammersley, a man now aged 102, was recently held accountable for heinous crimes committed against a young girl over 40 years ago.

The disturbing incidents took place during the 1970s, a period marked by social upheaval and less awareness about child abuse, making the case particularly poignant and significant.

Hammersley's victim, who is now in her 40s, finally found the courage to come forward and report the abuse after many years of silence.

Her decision was prompted by a family celebration in 2015, when Hammersley's family threw him a birthday party to mark his 100th year.

The event was covered by a local newspaper, which inadvertently brought the case back into public consciousness and prompted her to seek justice.

During the sentencing hearing held at Aylesbury Crown Court on a recent Monday, the victim was commended for her bravery and resilience.

She sat quietly in the courtroom as the proceedings unfolded, her identity protected by law.

Judge Francis Sheridan, presiding over the case, acknowledged her courage and praised her for her steadfastness in pursuing justice over the years.

Hammersley, who was not present in court, was represented by legal counsel.

The judge described his absence as a choice, given his advanced age, and emphasized that his health issues had been considered during the proceedings.

Hammersley, a resident of New Malden in Surrey, had previously pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault against a girl under the age of 14, with incidents dating back to 1977 and 1979.

In his remarks, Judge Sheridan highlighted the unusual nature of the case, particularly the awarding of compensation.

He stated, “To award compensation is wholly unusual in a case like this but the young victim has carried this cross of abuse for year upon year upon year.” The judge further expressed admiration for her perseverance, saying, “She very properly complained to anyone that would listen.

She has waited a very long time for justice but I hope justice is what she has got.” He also praised her honesty and integrity, noting, “She was telling the truth the whole way through, from the first complaint to the last.

For that I applaud her for her steadfastness in getting justice.” As part of his sentence, Hammersley was given a two-year suspended prison term, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within the next two years.

Additionally, he was placed on the sex offender register and ordered to pay the victim £25,000 in compensation.

The court's decision to impose a suspended sentence reflects the complexities of sentencing elderly offenders, especially those with health concerns.

Judge Sheridan concluded by expressing hope that the victim could now find some closure, stating, “I hope now you can leave feeling that ultimately you have been vindicated for persevering and hope you have seen justice done.” The case underscores the importance of persistence and bravery in confronting past abuses, regardless of the passage of time, and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by victims seeking justice against perpetrators of such crimes.
