DILAN AMIN, DERBY SEX PREDATOR, SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN DERBY
In June 2018, a disturbing case of sexual abuse involving Dilan Amin, a man from Derby, reached its conclusion at Derby Crown Court. The senior detective responsible for bringing Amin to justice described him as a 'predator' and praised the courage of the victims who came forward to testify against him.
Following a thorough investigation, Amin was sentenced to a 12-year prison term for a series of heinous sex crimes committed against five young victims.
The youngest of these victims was only 13 years old at the time of the abuse.
The court heard how Amin targeted vulnerable girls, grooming them with drugs and alcohol to facilitate his predatory behavior.
One of the victims was taken to the International Hotel in Derby, where Amin supplied her with alcohol and cocaine, further exploiting her vulnerability.
Other victims were abused at The Famous Shop, a location on Pear Tree Road where Amin was employed and where he also resided.
Witness testimonies painted a consistent picture of Amin’s grooming tactics and abusive conduct.
Detective Inspector Andy Jones, who led the investigation, explained his reaction upon discovering that more victims might be involved.
He stated, “I was not surprised in this day and age.
We’re all aware of other high-profile child sexual exploitation investigations.
It was there in the back of my mind.
We spoke to one girl who mentioned multiple victims and our investigation took us to them.” Authorities acted swiftly, executing a raid on Amin’s residence and arresting him at St Mary’s Wharf Police Station in Derby.
Although Amin was initially released on bail, further investigative efforts uncovered additional victims and more instances of offending.
DI Jones emphasized the importance of safeguarding the victims, stating, “Keeping the girls who had come forward safe was a top priority.” He described Amin as a “predatory male who preyed on young females,” with the youngest victim being just 13.
Amin’s grooming involved the manipulation and exploitation of young girls through the supply of drugs and alcohol, a pattern that the police and prosecutors were determined to dismantle.
This case marked DI Jones’s first experience handling such a complex and sensitive investigation.
He reflected on the challenges involved, noting, “It’s different from homicide or drug supply cases.
It’s as much about supporting and safeguarding the victims as it is about prosecuting the offender.” During the court proceedings, some victims were visibly distressed, breaking down in tears as they recounted the abuse inflicted by Amin and giving evidence against him.
When asked about potential improvements in how young victims are treated during court processes, DI Jones expressed a desire for reforms that would make court less traumatic and provide better support for victims throughout the legal proceedings.
