DERRY GILFOY AND HIS SHOCKING CRIME IN SOUTHAMPTON
In a disturbing incident that unfolded on the streets of Southampton, police officers were alerted to an urgent situation involving a vulnerable woman in distress.The woman, who was working as a prostitute, was seen pleading desperately for her safety after she dialed 999, clearly fearing imminent harm from her client.
The encounter began when Derry Gilfoy approached the woman and agreed to pay her £40 for her services.
The two then proceeded to a nearby motorcycle dealership's car park, where the alleged assault took place.
Southampton Crown Court heard that Gilfoy, at that time heavily intoxicated, exhibited violent behavior that escalated quickly.
Witnesses described how he started shouting and swearing at the woman before suddenly slapping her across the face.
The court was told that Gilfoy made degrading comments, asserting that as a sex worker, the woman was expected to conform to his demands.
His actions became more aggressive as he forced her to the ground and physically assaulted her again.
Despite the frightening assault, the woman managed to hide her mobile phone down her top, and in a moment of calm amidst the chaos, she was able to silently dial 999.
From the police listening to her distress calls, authorities could hear her crying, screaming, and desperately pleading with her attacker to stop.
The call provided crucial evidence for law enforcement, who subsequently launched an investigation.
After the incident, Gilfoy reportedly returned to his home in Rowan Close, Southampton, where he collapsed on his sofa and eventually went to bed.
However, evidence at the scene linked him to the crime scene through DNA traces found on her scarf, leading to his arrest.
Derry Gilfoy, aged 36, was charged with multiple offenses, including rape, assault by penetration, and possession of cannabis—an illegal substance discovered during his arrest at his residence.
His court appearance confirmed his guilt, and he immediately admitted to the charges.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Patrick Hooton condemned Gilfoy's behavior, stating, "You treated this woman, prostitute or not, appallingly badly.
You humiliated her." The judge emphasized the severity of his misconduct and the physical and emotional damage inflicted.
In his defense, counsel Richard Onslow expressed remorse on Gilfoy's behalf, highlighting that the defendant was genuinely sorry and that he had also prevented the woman from having to testify in court, thus sparing her additional trauma.
The mitigation remarks also pointed out that Gilfoy’s actions had already devastated his own life along with that of his family.
The court sentenced Derry Gilfoy to serve five years in prison for his crimes.
Additionally, he was ordered to be registered on the sex offenders register for life, marking a significant legal consequence for his unacceptable conduct in Southampton.
