DAVID PATERSON FROM KILMARNOCK FIGHTS BID FOR FREEDOM AFTER SEX OFFENCES REIGN OF TERROR

In July 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving David Paterson, a man from Kilmarnock, who has been convicted of heinous sexual offences spanning over three decades. The case has left a profound impact on his victims, particularly a young mother who has chosen to remain anonymous for legal reasons. She was deeply affected upon learning that Paterson, who was sentenced earlier this year, is now attempting to secure his release from prison.

Paterson, aged 53, was incarcerated after a series of investigations uncovered his long history of predatory behaviour. His crimes included the abuse of three women, two girls, and a boy, with incidents dating back to 1983 and continuing until 2018. His actions were deemed so serious that he received a combined sentence of seven and a half years at Ayr Sheriff Court in April. The court heard how he targeted victims at various addresses across Ayrshire, exploiting their trust and inflicting lasting trauma.

One of his victims, a young girl, was told by Paterson to keep her abuse a secret, a tactic often used by predators to maintain control and silence. Despite his protests of innocence, the victims were compelled to give evidence against him in two separate trials held at Ayr Sheriff Court. The court found him guilty in both cases, condemning his actions as depraved and a significant breach of trust.

Following his conviction, Sheriff Scott Pattison sentenced Paterson to four years in prison. Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities post-release. The sheriff also imposed a two-year Extended Sentence, which requires community supervision to ensure public safety. Sheriff Pattison emphasized the gravity of Paterson’s offences, describing his behaviour as “serious sexual offences” and highlighting the breach of trust involved.

In a separate case, Sheriff John Montgomery sentenced Paterson to 18 months imprisonment. The judge described his conduct as “depraved,” underscoring the severity of his crimes. Now, as Paterson seeks to appeal his conviction and sentence, it has been revealed that he is attempting to be released on bail during the appeals process. Victims and advocacy groups have been notified of his bid for freedom, raising concerns about the potential risk to the community.

Letters informing the victims of Paterson’s appeal were sent out, indicating that he may be released temporarily from prison while his case is reviewed by the High Court. This development has caused distress among those affected, who fear that his release could pose a threat to public safety. The case continues to attract attention, highlighting the ongoing struggle for justice and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals from repeat offenders.
