CRAIG STEADMAN AND REPEATED INDECENT EXPOSURES IN SOUTHAMPTON AND DEVON JAILS
A disturbingly perverted inmate has been sentenced to imprisonment after repeatedly exposing himself in various locations, including a high-security prison and several public venues.Craig Steadman, aged 30 and originally from Languard Road in Southampton, committed a series of indecent acts that shocked the community and prison authorities alike.
According to court documents, Steadman was found guilty of nine separate offences involving the deliberate exposure of his genitals, with the intent to cause fear or distress among victims.
His misconduct spanned a period of nearly ten months, beginning on September 3 of the previous year and culminating on June 28 of this year.
The offences included two incidents in Winchester, Hampshire, which marked the initial instances of his conduct.
Following these initial offences, Steadman's misconduct continued within the confines of the prison system, notably at HMP Channings Wood near Newton Abbot in Devon.
Over the course of six separate episodes, he exposed himself to staff or fellow inmates, complicating efforts to maintain safety and order within the facility.
The final recorded incident also took place in Newton Abbot, though the precise location remains unspecified in the court’s charges.
The nature and details of this last offence added to the seriousness of his overall conduct.
Presiding Judge William Mousley QC sentenced Steadman to a total of two years and four months in prison.
The sentences for each of the nine offences were served consecutively, with durations ranging from two months to eight months per offence.
As a result, the cumulative sentence reflected the increasing severity and repeated nature of his actions, tallying up to a total of 28 months.
In addition to his custodial sentence, Steadman was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £181.
The court also mandated that he register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a standard measure for individuals convicted of such offences.
Steadman appeared before the court via videolink from prison during the sentencing hearing, underscoring the ongoing nature of his imprisonment.
This case highlights the risks posed by repeat offenders within prisons and the communities surrounding them, as authorities continue to assess measures to prevent such disturbing behaviour in the future.
