June 2023 ‘Deviant’ paedophile who secretly filmed schoolgirl could face longer behind bars A paedophile who secretly filmed an underage girl could face a longer prison sentence after his case was referred to the Court of Appeal for being potentially unduly lenient. Corey Brown was caught after the girl reported the sick abuse to her school. Indecent images were found on a video pen, camera and his laptop after he was arrested by police officers. Teesside Crown Court previously heard how the youngster was left sickened and “traumatised” by the abuse and resorted to self-harm. After admitting three counts of voyeurism and two counts of making indecent images of a child, Brown was jailed for 12 months in March. The Solicitor General Michael Tomlinson KC MP has referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal as it “appears unduly lenient”. Earlier this year, prosecutor Jenny Haigh said: “[The victim] found the defendant’s phone in a bathroom. She went on to state that he had been recording her. She also told the teachers he had been taking pictures of her naked.” At the time of his sentencing, the youngster was not able to provide a victim impact statement as she was “traumatised”, however Ms Haigh summarised what the victim had said to her mother. The statement reads: “I saw his phone over the top of the door when I was getting changed. It made me feel sick and it made me feel mad. “It made me feel really unsafe and very upset, because of this, I used to hurt myself. I’ve had panic attacks since all this has happened and it feels like I can’t breath. He ruined two years of my life.” Passing the sentence. Recorder Thomas Moran said: “It’s clear you are entirely responsible for the state she is in. You denied sexual interest in [the victim] that is plainly a lie. “It’s perfectly obvious that you had a deviant sexual interest.” Brown of Midfield View, Stockton, was also handed 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and banned from contacting the victim.
