Ian Smith

Middlesbrough Stockton Sexual Abuser

May 2012 Paedophile jailed for defying order TWO mums were shocked to learn their children had been in contact with a sex offender, a court heard. Ian Smith has been jailed again for his “calculated defiance” of a court order which was intended to protect children from him. He became a regular at a pub where the licensee came to trust him, and he talked to her children, Teesside Crown Court heard. The mum later learned Smith was a registered sex offender. She said in a statement: “I dread to think what could have happened to one of my children. I feel disgusted with myself that I’ve allowed someone with his convictions in my trust and confidence.” He spoke to the child of another mother who worked at the pub. She was shocked to learn of his criminal past. The mum said: “Had I known, there’s no way I’d allow (my child) into the same environment as Ian.” There was no suggestion of any untoward behaviour towards the children, but he was not meant to be speaking to them in the first place. Smith, 51, was banned from having contact with under-18s and accessing the internet under a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO). Smith, of Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, admitted three breaches – the contact with the two children and using a friend’s computer to access the internet for an insurance quote. He was a persistent sex offender with indecent assaults on males and females on his record in the 1980s-1990s. He was given the SOPO in 2008, along with a suspended jail sentence, for 17 offences of making indecent images of children. In 2009, he was jailed for three-and-a-half years for 13 SOPO breaches. The court heard at that time how he invited youngsters into his flat for sleepovers, gave them alcohol and got a 16-year-old girl pregnant. He befriended single women to have contact with their children, visited the mums’ homes and bought children presents, the court was told. He has now been recalled to prison to finish the original 42-month sentence. Smith had completed two sex offenders’ programmes. Judge Gillian Matthews QC told Smith he clearly understood the court order and still repeatedly breached it. “These acts to me have the impression of calculated defiance,” she added, jailing Smith for 18 months. August 2009 Paedophile with history of abusing children jailed A PAEDOPHILE with an appalling record of offences against children was jailed for three-and-a-half years. Ian Smith, 48, had convictions for indecent assaults on boys and girls dating back 27 years and had been jailed three times before. Last year, he was given a suspended six-month jail sentence for accessing internet child porn and given an indefinite Sex Offender’s Prevention Order (Sopo), banning him from any contact with youngsters under the age of 18. Smith, of Brusselton Court, Stockton, admitted 13 breaches of the order since July last year That order did not stop him getting a 16-year-old girl pregnant in September last year and befriending single women to “worm his way into contact with children”, said prosecutor Paul Newcombe at Teesside Crown Court. Smith was arrested by police who were keeping a close watch on Sopo-listed criminals. They found that he had invited youngsters to his flat for sleepovers and given them alcohol. He also visited single mothers in their homes, bought children presents and had given them lifts in his car, the court was told. One mother was physically sick when she learnt that he was a paedophile and she felt that he had groomed her family as targets, added Mr Newcombe. Bryan Russell, mitigating, said that Smith had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and he appreciated that hefaced jail. Smith claimed that one mother had introduced many youngsters to him when she knew about his background. Mr Russell told the judge: “He really was trying to live a relatively normal life, and I appreciate itmay not be a normal life. “But having been remanded in custody, he has had it drilled into him how seriously the courts take these breaches.” Judge George Moorhouse told Smith: “You have an appalling record for offences of a sexual nature against young girls and boys. “These are serious matters because they are totally in breach of the order that was made. “These matters are so serious as to justify a custodial sentence and a lengthy custodial sentence because of your record.
