November 2020 Coward who broke baby’s arms ‘because she wouldn’t stop crying’ is jailed A coward who broke a baby’s arms because she would not stop crying and then claimed she had been injured when he had a fit has been jailed. Connor Brown, 23, had the 18-month-old girl on his lap when she became upset and he forced her arms behind her back causing them to snap after he couldn’t stop her crying The girl’s mum told Hamilton Sheriff Court that she witnessed the incident in the living room of her home in Blantyre and heard her daughter’s arms crack The mum initially told medics at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride that her daughter had fallen behind a television. But when suspicious staff challenged her she admitted Brown had been responsible. An examination showed the child’s humerus bones had been fractured during the attack on in September 2018. Callous Brown from Larkhall, insisted the baby’s injuries were caused by the child having an epileptic fit but that was rejected by the Sheriff Thomas Millar following a special hearing. He claimed he could not remember assaulting the child and said he would never injure anybody on purpose. But a doctor who treated the child told the court the fractures could have only happened by their arms being twisted and bent backwards with force. The tot made a full recovery but both arms were put in plaster for a number of weeks to heal. Brown, admitted assaulting the girl to her severe injury and he was jailed for 21 months by Sheriff Thomas Millar. Sheriff Millar said: “The child was 18-months-old at the time when you lost your temper with her, bent her arms behind her back and caused spiral fractures in both arms. “This caused extreme distress to the child. “Even withstanding your age and limited record, only a custodial sentence must follow for causing an injury such as this to a young child. “This is a very serious offence.” Brown was told he would have been jailed for two years if had he not pleaded guilty.
