JORDAN STEEL FROM LARKHALL SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS IN SCOTLAND

Jordan Steel, a resident of West Clyde Street in Larkhall, has been found guilty of severe animal cruelty involving eight dogs kept in outdoor kennels at his property. The incident, which took place between March 7 and April 22, 2016, revealed a disturbing neglect of the animals, which included breeds such as lurchers, Patterdale terrier-type dogs, and spaniels. These dogs were rescued by the Scottish SPCA after investigators uncovered the extent of their suffering.

Among the rescued animals were a lurcher cross named Blitz, a Saluki cross called Cindy, and a Spaniel named Levi. All three were found in a dire state, suffering from significant health issues including weight loss, flea infestations, mite infections, excessive ear wax, hair loss, and various skin conditions. The conditions of the dogs pointed to a clear failure on the part of Steel to provide proper care and adequate treatment, violating the standards set forth under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Steel admitted to a charge under this legislation, which accused him of neglecting the basic needs of his animals and failing to supply a suitable diet. The court heard that he had not taken the necessary steps to ensure the well-being of the dogs, leading to their suffering and deterioration. An undercover Scottish SPCA inspector, who attended Steel’s home during the investigation, described the scene: “When we visited the property it was clear that all eight dogs were underweight, with a number of them scoring a one – the lowest score – on a body conditioning scoring system. The dogs required treatment for chronic skin conditions and flea infestation, which they weren’t receiving.”

As a result of the investigation and subsequent court proceedings, Steel was handed a five-year ban from owning dogs. The court also permitted that he could occasionally be required to provide exercise for a dog belonging to his mother, which still resides at the property. The inspector expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating, “We’re pleased the courts have handed down this sentence and hope that Steel seriously considers his suitability to own and care for animals in the future.”

Initially, the charge also included allegations that Steel had failed to provide appropriate and adequate nutrition, leading to the dogs becoming emaciated and losing significant body weight. However, this particular aspect was later removed from the formal charges.

In terms of sentencing, Steel was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work within six months, a reduction from the original 15 hours due to his guilty pleas. This sentence was offered as an alternative to imprisonment. The court’s ruling also included a five-year ban on owning dogs, which expired in March 2022. The case highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the importance of accountability for those who neglect their responsibilities as pet owners.
