COLIN HOLMAN FROM WARRINGTON CAUGHT WITH CHILD PORN AND ILLEGAL MATERIALS AT PRIMARY SCHOOL

A former caretaker from Warrington has been found guilty of possessing indecent images of children and illegal pornography after a disturbing discovery at a primary school where he previously worked. Colin Holman, aged 67 and residing on Warren Avenue, was involved in a series of illicit activities that came to light during a routine inspection of the school premises.

Holman, who had served at the Cheshire primary school for a total of 16 years, was known to have developed a troubling collection of inappropriate materials. These included laminated photographs of child pornography, which he kept hidden in a locked cupboard within a storeroom that only he had access to. The collection contained images of a pre-pubescent boy, approximately 10 years old, depicted naked from the waist down, as well as a girl around 13 years old dressed in school uniform but with her genitals exposed. These images were printed on A4 paper, laminated, and stored alongside photographs of female pupils that had previously been used in school wall friezes.

Holman’s inappropriate collection extended beyond photographs. He also possessed a variety of girls’ school uniform items, which he claimed to have recovered from school bins, raising further concerns about his conduct. His disturbing collection was discovered when a new caretaker, taking over in July 2022, was asked to clear out the storeroom cupboard. Upon opening it, he immediately reported the contents to the head teacher, who then contacted law enforcement authorities.

Following the report, police officers conducted a search of Holman’s residence. During the search, they uncovered additional pornography, including magazines and DVDs, as well as press clippings of sexual news stories. Among these was a report about a rape and another with the headline ‘I was treated like an animal’. Officers also found more photographs of girls from the school in Holman’s bedroom drawers, further evidence of his inappropriate interests.

Holman admitted to possessing a laminated picture of a naked pre-pubescent boy, claiming he found it blowing around the school car park and intended to burn it but forgot. Despite this, the image was laminated, consistent with his other collection. He denied any knowledge of the laminated photograph of the underage girl, who was not a pupil at his school, and who was depicted in a sexualized pose without underwear. His denial was met with skepticism during the trial.

Holman faced charges of two counts of possessing indecent images of children. He pleaded not guilty, claiming he was merely a hoarder. The case was heard at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Friday, May 17. Prosecutor Jessica Pridding argued that Holman’s collection and behavior indicated a sexual interest in children, suggesting that the school environment may have been a source of arousal for him.

After deliberation, Holman was found guilty on both counts. The case was then adjourned for a pre-sentence report. On June 19, at Crewe Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Jack McGarva sentenced Holman. The judge decided that a sexual harm prevention order was unnecessary in this case but ordered Holman to sign the sex offender register at Crewe police station for five years. Additionally, he was given a two-year community order, which includes up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities. Holman was also fined £160, ordered to pay £645 in prosecution costs, and a victim surcharge of £114. This case highlights the ongoing concerns about safeguarding and the importance of vigilance in educational environments to prevent such disturbing incidents from occurring.
