August 2016 Already convicted paedophile jailed for assaults on boy A paedophile who targeted a boy from Huntingdon has been jailed for eight years. Clive Baxter, 71, is already serving a 16 year sentence for sex offences and had a record of assaulting young boys going back to 1969, Cambridge Crown Court heard. Baxter, who is also known as Edward Baxter, earlier admitted six indecent assaults on the boy who was aged under 14 at the time and had been sent to the Crown Court for sentence. Judge Gareth Hawkesworth told Baxter he had targeted and groomed the youngster and had committed serious offences against him. “You have been a paedophile interested in young boys for a very long time, certainly since 1969,” he said. The court heard that there had been an earlier occasion when possible abuse had been raised, but the victim said nothing had happened. Baxter, who represented himself and appeared in court on a video link from prison, apologised to his victim and said he now appreciated what he had been doing was wrong. “I really apologise to him. I now know how he must feel and really apologise to him and I hope he can get his life sorted out,” he said. Baxter said he had himself been molested as a child when he was sent to a convalescent home. He told the court that he was taking prison courses to make sure he did not offend again. Baxter, who said he had relapsed after being married, told the court: “I have lost everyone. I am on my own and I have got to start putting my record straight.” Sally Hobson, prosecuting, said the victim had been embarrassed when the possibility of abuse had been raised when he was a child and did not want to appear vulnerable, so he said nothing had happened. But the assaults were on his mind as an adult and were subsequently reported to the police. “He said he was unable to get over the abuse and that he had had the opportunity to report it but didn’t because he hadn’t been brave enough at the time to report it,” she said. Miss Hobson said Baxter, who was already a serving prisoner, made frank admissions when he was interviewed. He was first convicted of a indecent assault on a male under 16 in 1969 and received other sentences, including custody, before he was given a jail term totalling 16 years in 2013. The sentence was concurrent with Baxter’s existing term, but the parole board will decide when he is to be released.
