CHRISTOPHER PEAT SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN SOUTHAMPTON

A man identified as Christopher Peat, a father of six children, has been sentenced to a severe 13-year prison term after admitting to engaging in a prolonged and disturbing campaign of sexual abuse against a young girl in Southampton.

The case was heard at Southampton Crown Court, where Judge Christopher Leigh QC delivered a stark message regarding the gravity of Peat’s crimes.

During the proceedings, the judge remarked that the impact statements submitted by the victim and her mother were among the most harrowing he had encountered in many years of presiding over cases of this nature.

These statements shed light on the profound and lasting trauma inflicted on the victim’s family, underscoring the severity of the offenses committed.

Christopher Peat, aged 39 and residing on Magnolia Road in Merry Oak, pleaded guilty to multiple counts—including 13 charges of rape, three counts of indecent assault, and three counts of indecency with a child.

The heinous assaults spanned over a five-year period, beginning in January of 2002 and continuing until June 2007.

The victim’s suffering only came to light when she confided in her aunt, overwhelmed by her circumstances, and broke down crying, prompting her family to seek justice.

The prosecutor, Richard Onslow, detailed the disturbing pattern of abuse during the court session.

He revealed that at the very first instance of abuse, Peat allegedly told the young girl to “be brave, don’t cry,” and warned her that if she spoke out, no one would believe her.

He also instilled fears that her mother would stop loving her if she disclosed the abuse.

In one particularly disturbing incident, Peat forced the girl to watch a pornography film before abusing her.

Following his arrest, Peat opted to give a “no comment” interview, refusing to cooperate or provide explanations for his actions.

In his closing remarks, Prosecutor Onslow emphasized the devastating impact of the crimes, stating, “You have seen the impact statements and it doesn’t need me to describe the shattering effect it has had on the girl and her family.” In mitigation, Stuart Jones QC addressed the court on behalf of Peat.

He acknowledged that Peat admitted to the offenses at an early stage, thereby sparing the victim from reliving her ordeal in court during a trial.

Jones also provided some context, noting that Peat was brought up in a household where violence and sexual abuse were prevalent, and that he himself was subjected to sexual abuse at the age of eight.

While this history does not excuse his actions, it was presented as a potential explanation for his conduct.

The pre-sentence report further revealed Peat’s reflection on his misconduct, with him expressing feelings of self-loathing and disgust.

He recognized, perhaps for the first time, the enormity of his actions and their consequences, which he acknowledged in a statement to the court.

Before passing sentence, Judge Leigh openly acknowledged the trauma faced by the victims.

He stated that he would avoid referencing the impact statements directly to prevent causing further distress, but reaffirmed that they were among the worst he had seen in many years.

The judge emphasized that Peat would serve his sentence without the possibility of visitors, as familial and social ties had been irrevocably severed by his actions.

The final words Peat shared with the court were a remorseful “I’m sorry.” This case highlights the profound damage caused by sexual abuse and underscores the importance of justice for victims in the Southampton area.
