CHRISTIAN HINGARAU SENTENCED TO EIGHT AND A HALF YEARS IN PRISON FOR RAPE IN SOUTHAMPTON
A man named Christian Hingarau has been sentenced to eight years and six months behind bars after being found guilty of committing a violent and appalling assault on a sex worker in Southampton. The incident took place in the early hours of January 23 at an address located on Empress Road in Bevois, a district within Southampton.
Despite denying the rape charge, Hingarau was convicted by a jury during his trial at Southampton Crown Court.
He had also pleaded guilty to a second related count but maintained his innocence regarding the rape accusation.
Authorities from Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that Hingarau’s actions led to a severe legal consequence.
The conviction followed a thorough investigation, supported by the evidence presented in court.
In addition to his imprisonment, Hingarau has been ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, highlighting the gravity of his crimes.
Furthermore, he has been subjected to a sexual harm protection order that will remain in effect for 15 years, restricting his behavior and protecting vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
The victim, a 36-year-old woman who wishes to remain anonymous, demonstrated remarkable bravery by coming forward despite initial hesitation.
She expressed her thoughts after the verdict, emphasizing the importance of justice and recognition for sex workers.
She stated, "We can get justice, we deserve it, we are valued.
If you have been hurt - come forward, get help, you will be listened to." Her willingness to speak out highlights the difficulties many sex workers face when contemplating reporting crimes committed against them.
Detective Sergeant Janine Bradley, the Senior Investigating Officer in the case, explained that the victim was initially reluctant to report the incident because she feared her claims would not be believed.
She underscored a broader concern that often discourages victims from seeking justice.
Sergeant Bradley emphasized that this case exemplifies the serious stance taken by law enforcement on such matters.
She added, “There is often a reluctance to come forward, but this case shows how seriously we take such crimes.
We want to encourage sex workers in the future to report these crimes.
If you report it, you will be listened to.” The investigation was conducted as part of Operation Hem, a long-term effort by Hampshire Constabulary that specifically aims to address issues surrounding street prostitution in Southampton.
This operation involves collaboration with various partner agencies to find viable alternatives to street-based sex work, while also safeguarding those involved from significant harm.
The initiative targets individuals who exploit, abuse, or use violence against sex workers, aiming to curb these dangerous behaviors.
Hampshire Constabulary urges anyone with information concerning the exploitation or abuse of sex workers, or anyone who has experienced violence or coercion, to contact the police either through 101 or 999 in emergencies.
The force emphasizes its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and offers support and guidance for sex workers seeking safety and assistance.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat violence and exploitation in Southampton.
