CHARLES MARCH FROM SOUTHAMPTON ESCAPES PRISON AFTER GROOMING SCAM WITH ONLINE CHILD PROTECTION TEAM
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Southampton community, Charles Edwin March, a pensioner from Southampton, appeared before Southampton Crown Court in connection with serious allegations of online grooming and sexual communication with a minor.The incident dates back to March 2018, when March engaged in a disturbing online interaction with what he believed was an 11-year-old girl.
According to court reports, March initiated contact through an online profile that he thought belonged to a young girl.
However, the profile was actually operated by members of the online child protection team known as 'SKID,' who were monitoring online activities to prevent child exploitation.
From the very beginning of their communication, March's messages were highly explicit and sexually charged.
He also sent several images of himself engaging in sexual acts, further demonstrating his intent.
During the course of their online exchanges, March made arrangements to meet the girl in person with the intention of engaging in sexual acts, including the possibility of full sexual penetration.
Fortunately, the planned meeting never materialized, preventing further harm.
Members of SKID, acting in an undercover capacity, visited March at his residence in Southampton to confront him about the messages.
During the confrontation, March made a full confession on video, admitting to the inappropriate and illegal communication.
Following his admission, police were called to arrest March.
He was taken into custody and subsequently appeared in court to face charges.
The court heard the details of his actions and the serious nature of his misconduct.
Despite the gravity of the case, the judge decided to hand down a sentence of 16 months imprisonment, which was suspended for two years, meaning March would not serve time in prison unless he committed another offense within that period.
In addition to the suspended sentence, March was subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting his activities and requiring him to adhere to specific conditions aimed at protecting children.
Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade, ensuring ongoing monitoring and public safety measures.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and child protection agencies to combat online grooming and safeguard vulnerable minors from exploitation.
