CALUM LACEY AND HIS SHOCKING CRIMES IN SOUTHAMPTON

A teacher from Southampton, Calum Lacey, has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in serious sexual misconduct involving minors during the COVID-19 lockdown period.

The court heard that Lacey, aged 33 and residing on Station Road in Southampton, caused significant psychological trauma to two young children by sending them sexually explicit messages.

Lacey admitted to charges of sexual communication with a child and inciting one of the girls to partake in sexual activities.

During the proceedings at Southampton Crown Court, it was revealed that Lacey questioned one of his victims about her bra size and her sexual preferences, highlighting the inappropriate and predatory nature of his actions.

These alarming offenses took place between March and October 2020, a time when the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had led to nationwide school closures, forcing many children and teenagers to remain confined within their homes.

Such circumstances increased the vulnerability of minors to online threats and exploitation, and Lacey was among those who preyed on this vulnerable group.

Stuart Ellacotte, the prosecutor, detailed that one of Lacey’s victims had threatened to report his misconduct, but Lacey pleaded with her not to do so, claiming that if he were exposed, he would lose his job and his relationship.

In an arrest made in March of the previous year, police reported that Lacey admitted to making a mistake, explaining that he had been drinking heavily and acknowledged that he might have crossed the line while intoxicated.

A victim's statement, read aloud in court by Mr.

Ellacotte, conveyed the profound impact of Lacey’s actions, with one remarking, 'It will stay with me for the rest of my life.' This traumatic testimony underscored the lasting damage caused by his conduct.

Defence counsel, Stephen Tricker, acknowledged that Lacey’s behaviour had a deeply damaging effect on his victims.

He stated that Lacey was genuinely remorseful and accepted responsibility for his actions, having recognized his wrongdoing openly.

The mitigation also highlighted that Lacey faced severe personal consequences, including the loss of his home, relationship, and career—it was noted that prior to these events, he had a reputation for being of good character.

Furthermore, Mr.

Tricker described Lacey as being in a state of depression and heavy alcohol consumption at the time of the offences, which contributed to his deviant behaviour.

He emphasized that before this episode, Lacey had shown no prior criminal record.

In delivering the sentence, Judge Christopher Parker KC emphasized that Lacey’s misconduct had caused considerable psychological harm to his victims.

Despite noting that Lacey had no previous convictions and had taken steps to confront his behaviour by pleading guilty early, the judge determined that the seriousness of the offences necessitated a custodial sentence.

Lacey was sentenced to 12 months for each offence, with the sentences to run consecutively, resulting in a total of two years imprisonment.

In addition to the prison term, the judge imposed a sexual harm prevention order for five years and placed Lacey on the sex offenders' register for ten years, reflecting the ongoing nature of the restrictions meant to protect the community from potential future harm.
