BRIAN MATTHEWS JAILED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN EAST SUSSEX
A man identified as Brian Matthews has been sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment after being found guilty of engaging in severe and prolonged sexual abuse against a young girl in East Sussex.Matthews, who resides on London Road in Bexhill, was handed a prison sentence of 19 years as a result of his heinous crimes.
The sexual misconduct began when the victim was only nine years old and persisted over several years, extending into her late teens.
During this period, Matthews subjected her to numerous forms of sexual violence, including multiple counts of rape.
The abuse was not limited to physical acts; it also involved emotional and psychological manipulation aimed at controlling the girl’s actions and attempting to normalize his predatory behavior.
This pattern of abuse caused extensive trauma, lasting well into her adulthood.
The investigation into Matthews’ conduct was initiated after the police received reports from the victim and other sources.
Law enforcement officials promptly launched a detailed inquiry into the allegations.
Throughout the process, officers provided the victim with specialized support services, recognizing the sensitive and traumatic nature of the case.
Matthews was formally arrested and faced numerous charges, including: four counts of assault on a girl under the age of 13 involving touching; four counts of sexual assault with penetration on a female over 13; the rape of a girl aged between 13 and 15; two counts of rape involving a female aged 16 or older; two counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child; cruelty towards a person under 16; and engaging in coercive and controlling behavior.
Initially, Matthews denied all allegations during his trial.
However, after a jury deliberation, he was ultimately convicted on all charges except one.
The court discharged the jury from reaching a verdict on the count of coercive and controlling behavior.
The sentencing took place at Lewes Crown Court on April 28, where the judge imposed a 19-year prison sentence, which includes an additional year on extended license.
Matthews has also been ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
In addition to his prison sentence, Matthews was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that prohibits any contact with his victim or anyone under the age of 18 unless specific consent has been given by a parent, guardian, or social services.
The order also restricts him from possessing any device capable of storing or accessing digital images unless it is subject to inspection by police authorities.
Detective Liz Brunt expressed her condemnation of Matthews’ actions, emphasizing the devastating impact his abuse has had on the victim.
She praised the victim’s extraordinary bravery in reporting the crimes, supporting the investigation, and standing firm throughout the judicial process.
Brunt highlighted that without her courage, bringing Matthews to justice would not have been possible.
The case underscores the importance of awareness and reporting of sexual offenses.
Authorities encourage anyone who has experienced similar abuse to seek help through the Sussex Police website or other support channels.
The sentencing marks a significant step toward justice and aims to prevent Matthews from causing further harm to other vulnerable individuals in the future.
