BENJAMIN HASSELL FROM SOUTHAMPTON CONVICTED OF INDECENT ASSAULT AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
Benjamin Hassell, aged 70, has been convicted of indecent assault following a detailed trial, after initially admitting to seven charges related to the possession of indecent images of a child. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing history dating back to 1987, when Hassell committed a sexual assault against a young girl in Southampton.
The victim, who was only six years old at the time, courageously came forward in 2020 to report the abuse to the police.
Her decision to speak out prompted a thorough investigation into Hassell’s activities.
Law enforcement officers responded by seizing multiple electronic devices from his residence on Clarendon Road, Southampton.
These included a laptop, a digital storage device, and an SD card.
Forensic analysis of these devices uncovered a shocking collection of over 2,000 indecent images of children, further implicating Hassell in the possession and distribution of child exploitation material.
Despite initially pleading not guilty to the charge of indecent assault, Hassell was ultimately found guilty by a jury after a trial.
In sentencing, the court handed down a prison term of seven years and ten months to Hassell, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the impact on his young victim.
The case has drawn significant attention to issues of child abuse and the importance of vigilant reporting and investigation in safeguarding vulnerable children.
