BARRY LEVITT CONVICTED OF MURDER IN SOUTH-EAST LONDON
Barry Levitt, aged 36, was found guilty of the murder of his mother, Celia Levitt, at his residence in South-East London on August 31. The court was told that the killing took place the day after she had taken him to a hospital for treatment of his worsening mental health. Levitt admitted to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order at the Old Bailey. During the proceedings, it was disclosed that Levitt had also stabbed his mother with a knitting needle and smothered her with a pillow. A court statement noted, "She was killed because she came to your aid. When she heard you had relapsed, she came from France to help you in any way she could. In your mentally deranged state, you killed her." Judge Mr. Justice Paul Dodgson described Levitt as being in a "mentally deranged state" at the time of the incident, attributing the murder to his mental disorder. The Princess Royal Hospital confirmed that Levitt was under the care of the mental health team from Oxleas, an NHS mental health trust, and his GP, but there was no record of an assessment by the hospital's own in-house team.
