BARRY BROOKS FROM HASTINGS JAILED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In March 2012, Barry Brooks, a resident of Hastings, East Sussex, was sentenced to eight months in prison after authorities uncovered a collection of deeply disturbing child abuse images on his computer. Brooks, who was unemployed at the time, had previously been cautioned by police in 2009 for possessing indecent images of children. Despite this prior warning, he continued to engage in illegal activities related to child exploitation.

His latest arrest was the result of an intelligence-led investigation conducted by Sussex Police's Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT). During the investigation, authorities discovered that Brooks had amassed more than 1,500 indecent images, including some classified as extreme and others that were banned under current legislation. The severity of the images was underscored by the fact that the court described them as 'horrific' during sentencing.

Brooks, aged 63 and residing on Chiltern Drive in Hastings, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including 11 counts of making indecent images of children, four counts of possessing extreme images, and four counts of possessing banned images of children. His plea and the evidence presented in court led to his conviction and subsequent sentencing at Hove Crown Court on a Friday.

In addition to his prison term, Brooks was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO), which imposes restrictions on his activities to prevent further offending. Upon release, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure aimed at monitoring his behavior and preventing potential harm.

It is important to note that police investigations found no evidence suggesting Brooks had contacted or abused any children directly. Furthermore, the children depicted in the images are not believed to be from the Hastings area, which provides some context to the nature of his offenses.

Detective Constable Jackie Keogh of Sussex Police emphasized the gravity of the crime, stating, 'There was no evidence that Brooks had shared the images with anyone else, but it has to be remembered that every such image is of a child being abused, and every acquisition of them via the internet simply encourages their continued existence and supply.' She highlighted concerns about Brooks's prior caution in 2009, which indicated he was a registered sex offender at the time of his latest offenses.

Keogh further explained that Brooks's collection included some particularly serious images, and police remain committed to pursuing offenders involved in such crimes. Jon Brown, head of strategy for sexual abuse at the NSPCC, echoed these sentiments, stressing that while Brooks did not directly abuse children, each image represents a heinous act and a betrayal of trust. Brown pointed out that viewing such images perpetuates the cycle of abuse and encourages its continuation.

Questions about whether an eight-month sentence is sufficient for such a grave offense were raised, especially considering this was Brooks's second conviction. Experts agree that offenders like Brooks must undergo treatment and be closely monitored to mitigate the risk they pose to children upon their release. Authorities are determined to continue their efforts to bring offenders to justice and prevent further harm to vulnerable children.
