ASHLEY WOODRUFF FROM YEOVIL JAILED AFTER HORRIFIC NEGLECT OF TERRIER NEAR DEATH
In March 2021, a disturbing case of animal cruelty came to light in Yeovil, Somerset, involving the severe neglect of a small dog named Barney. The incident prompted swift action from authorities after a concerned member of the public tipped off the RSPCA about the condition of the dog, leading inspector Marie Griffith to investigate the premises of Ashley Woodruff, a 28-year-old resident of St Johns Road, Yeovil.Upon arriving at Woodruff's address, Inspector Griffith observed a distressing scene. She reported that Woodruff was holding a small brown terrier-type dog tightly in his arms. Despite the fact that much of the dog's body was obscured by Woodruff's grasp, the inspector could immediately see that Barney was in an extremely dire state of health. The dog was severely emaciated, with his ribs, spine, and pelvic bones clearly visible through his thin coat. His eyes appeared sunken, and his overall condition suggested a profound level of suffering.
Barney was found to be suffering from hypothermia, dehydration, and depression. His coat was dull and lacked vitality, and he appeared lethargic and depressed, indicating a prolonged period of neglect. The veterinarian examination revealed that Barney's weight was a mere 4.8 kilograms, significantly below the expected weight for a dog of his age, sex, and breed. This weight loss was indicative of extreme malnutrition and neglect.
Further medical assessments confirmed that Barney's body temperature was dangerously low, a direct consequence of his inability to maintain warmth due to the lack of body fat. The veterinarian concluded that Barney's outdoor living conditions had contributed to his hypothermia, compounded by his severe undernourishment. The dog was immediately hospitalized, where he received intravenous fluids, warming treatments, and intensive care to stabilize his condition. Additionally, the vets identified several rotten teeth, some of which showed signs of infection, further highlighting the extent of his neglect.
Following treatment, Barney gradually recovered from his ordeal. His condition improved, and he was eventually placed in a loving new home where he can enjoy a healthier and happier life. The case against Ashley Woodruff culminated in his appearance before Yeovil Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 11 March. During the hearing, Woodruff admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to Barney and was subsequently sentenced to 12 weeks in jail. Moreover, he was banned from keeping animals for life, a measure intended to prevent any future incidents of neglect.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable animals from cruelty and neglect. The authorities and animal welfare organizations continue to work tirelessly to ensure that offenders are held accountable and that animals like Barney receive the care and compassion they deserve.
