ANDREW SELFRIDGE FROM MARGATE SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND ONLINE FANTASIES

In a shocking case that has sent ripples through the community of Margate, Andrew Selfridge, a former CCTV operator employed by Thanet District Council, has been sentenced to prison after a series of disturbing revelations about his online activities and possession of illegal images.

Selfridge, who was once recognized for his bravery and dedication, was awarded the High Sheriff’s Award for his quick thinking in tracking down a gunman following a shooting incident. Despite this commendation, it was uncovered that during his working hours, he was secretly engaging in inappropriate internet searches, specifically accessing pornography that involved children.

A comprehensive investigation into his work computer revealed that the married man had been systematically searching for and viewing perverted images. When authorities raided his residence on St Francis Close in Margate last year, they discovered nearly 3,000 illicit images stored in various files with titles such as “jail time” and “X files.” These images included some of the most severe category of abuse, with some photographs depicting children as young as two years old.

Prosecutor Donna East addressed Canterbury Crown Court, stating that Selfridge had admitted to nine offences related to illegal images. Despite a recommendation from probation services for a community order, the court sentenced him to nine months in prison.

However, the court also heard that Selfridge’s misconduct extended beyond mere possession of images. It was revealed that he had engaged in online chatroom conversations where he posed as a schoolgirl. During these exchanges, he shared disturbing fantasies involving abducting a school-aged girl, drugging her, and filming her being raped.

Judge Heather Norton addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of his actions. She noted that while some of the conversations might have been fantasies, the fact that he engaged in such discussions was profoundly disturbing. The judge also pointed out that there was evidence suggesting images had been exchanged during these chats.

The judge rejected the probation report’s suggestion that Selfridge’s actions were driven by boredom or a desire for companionship, asserting that such motives did not justify or explain the severity of his crimes. She underscored that viewing and discussing child abuse is a heinous crime that perpetuates the cycle of abuse and causes real harm to victims.

During the court proceedings, Selfridge’s wife was present in the public gallery, listening to the explicit details of her husband’s online fantasies.

Defense lawyer Kerry Waitt expressed her support for Selfridge, stating that he was “thoroughly ashamed of his actions” and that he had been living in a “fantasy world.” She described his behavior as part of a self-destructive pattern, driven by obliviousness to the consequences.

Selfridge’s background includes a distinguished 14-year career in the Army, from which he left in 1999. He had been working as a CCTV operator for over a decade, during which he was once recognized for his bravery in Ramsgate, where he helped police apprehend a gunman after witnessing a shooting in Camden Square.

Reflecting on his past achievements, Judge Norton acknowledged his service to the community and country, stating that he had been a man of “exemplary character.” Nevertheless, she emphasized that his recent actions starkly contrasted with his previous service.

As part of his sentence, Selfridge will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and is prohibited from having unsupervised contact with children for five years. Additionally, his computer and internet history will be subject to regular police inspections to ensure compliance with court orders.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can lurk behind seemingly respectable facades and the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat online child exploitation and abuse.
