LEEDS MAN ANDREW POWER JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
Andrew Power, aged 52, was convicted of heinous sexual offences involving two young girls. He told one victim he had 'something special' to show her prior to abusing her sexually.
In court, he falsely claimed that the girl had given her consent, despite her being a teenage girl at the time.
Residing on Jackie Smart Court in Leeds, Power faced sentencing for two separate indictments.
The first involved the abuse of an eight-year-old girl from Sheffield.
The court heard that Power contacted authorities after being notified of a second case involving another victim.
Prosecutor Michael Greenall explained that Power told the second girl he possessed 'something special', and they apparently co-slept under a quilt, where he began touching her.
The girl described feeling 'numb' during the assault, which led to lasting psychological damage, including thoughts of self-harm and feelings of emptiness.
The court also heard testimony regarding offenses in Sheffield against a teenage girl, where Power assaulted her with a blanket over both of them despite her protests.
Power denied these allegations during police interviews.
The girl’s mother noted behavioral changes—such as anger, difficulties at school, and self-harming—that occurred after the abuse.
Power was found guilty on multiple charges, including sexual assault of a child under 13 and assault by penetration, and was sentenced to nine years and three months in prison, with sentences served consecutively.
The judge acknowledged that Power had no prior convictions, but he admitted to some of the sexual acts, denying non-consent, citing mental health difficulties.
Some counts resulted in a hung jury, but prosecution chose not to seek a retrial.
During mitigation, Robin Bennett Frieze stated that Power displayed no remorse and argued that his mental health issues were influenced by the trial process.
