ANDREW BRENNAND'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN BURNLEY: SEX PREDATOR TARGETS LOCAL WOMEN

In September 2010, a disturbing series of criminal acts unfolded in the town of Burnley, involving Andrew Brennand, a man whose actions shocked the local community and drew widespread condemnation.

Andrew Brennand, aged 27 at the time, was once regarded as a promising radio producer with a notable career, including a position at BBC Radio Lancashire. However, following his dismissal from the BBC, Brennand's life took a dark turn, leading him to commit a series of sexual offenses that would leave a lasting impact on his victims and the town of Burnley.

Over a span of approximately 14 weeks, Brennand engaged in a disturbing spree of indecent exposure and sexual assault, during which he donned the football kit of Burnley FC, his favorite local team. His bizarre and menacing behavior involved lurking in parks and streets around Burnley, targeting women of various ages. His actions culminated in a particularly alarming incident at around 10:30 pm, when he exposed himself to a 15-year-old girl walking home. During this encounter, he made a disturbing remark, saying, “Come on, come on, touch it,” as he exposed himself.

Brennand’s criminal record includes seven counts of exposure and two counts of sexual assault, all committed between February and May of that year. His victims ranged in age from 15 to 60, and many reported feeling shocked, frightened, and deeply upset by his actions. Among those targeted was a 57-year-old woman whose breast was groped while she was walking with her pensioner sister, and a 35-year-old woman who feared she might be raped or killed during an assault.

His arrest came on May 13, after a victim observed him driving a car in his distinctive Burnley football kit—claret and blue and white—and reported the details to the police. This led to his swift apprehension. During police questioning, Brennand admitted to the offenses but expressed a troubling lack of remorse, even telling a doctor that he did not believe he was doing anything wrong at the time.

At Burnley Crown Court, Judge Beverley Lunt described Brennand as a “sexual predator” whose actions made the streets, parks, and reservoirs of Burnley unsafe for women. She emphasized the severity of his behavior, stating, “Your behaviour was persistent, determined and disgusting and you were a menace.” The judge also expressed concern over Brennand’s mental state, noting that he had told his psychiatrist he did not think he was doing anything wrong, which raised questions about his understanding of the harm caused.

Given that Brennand had been in custody since his arrest and had served the equivalent of a 10-month sentence, Judge Lunt decided against sending him to prison. Instead, she imposed a three-year community order, requiring Brennand to undergo supervision, attend a sex offender treatment program, and receive psychological therapy. She also ordered him to register as a sex offender for five years.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Lunt highlighted the importance of controlling Brennand’s deviant behavior to protect the public, especially women in Burnley. She pointed out that his actions had caused significant trauma to his victims and that his limited understanding of the gravity of his crimes was concerning. The court was told that Brennand’s first offense occurred on February 3, and his last on May 13, with nine victims in total. These victims included dog walkers and women from various walks of life, all of whom were left shaken and distressed.

Despite his criminal conduct, Brennand’s personal background includes academic achievements, such as a Master’s degree in media and communications and a Bachelor’s in Sociology. His defense argued that the loss of his job, coupled with personal issues, contributed to his behavior. His lawyer, Mr. Philip Holden, stated that Brennand had been unable to provide a clear explanation for his actions and that the experience of being convicted would be life-changing, making future employment in his field difficult.

Following the case, a BBC spokesperson confirmed that Brennand no longer worked for the broadcaster and declined to comment further on his conviction. The case has left a lasting scar on the Burnley community, highlighting the dangers of unchecked deviant behavior and the importance of vigilant law enforcement to protect vulnerable members of society.
