ALAN DEVINE FROM SUNDERLAND SENTENCED AFTER VIOLENT INCIDENT IN NEWCASTLE

In December of the previous year, Alan Devine, a resident of Sunderland, was sentenced to a suspended two-year prison term after being convicted of causing alarm and distress to an ex-partner through stalking. The court heard that Devine's actions had significantly impacted the victim, leading to his initial conviction and sentence.

By March of this year, Devine had entered into a new romantic relationship that lasted approximately six months. The couple decided to spend an evening together, visiting a local social venue before heading to Devine's residence to play cards. However, what was supposed to be a casual night took a violent turn.

According to Newcastle Crown Court proceedings, Devine's behavior became increasingly aggressive during the visit. He started shouting at his partner, displaying signs of anger and hostility. When she attempted to leave the house, Devine refused to let her go, physically restraining her and confiscating her phone to prevent her from calling for help or contacting others.

In the midst of the altercation, Devine forcefully pushed her head against a wall, which he had pinned her against, resulting in a noticeable lump forming at the back of her head. A struggle ensued on the floor, during which the victim managed to break free from his grip and fled the house in an attempt to escape the violence.

Devine, however, did not let her go easily. He pursued her in his van, catching up with her at the bottom of the street. In a further display of aggression, he abandoned his vehicle in the middle of a junction and physically restrained her against a wall. During this confrontation, he was shouting and swearing directly in her face, creating a highly threatening and intimidating situation.

Police officers arrived at the scene to find the woman with injuries to her head and leg, indicating the severity of the assault. The incident highlighted the ongoing danger Devine posed, especially considering his history.

Alan Devine, aged 43, of Smith Street, Sunderland, has a criminal record with 15 previous convictions. During the court proceedings, he admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm related to this latest incident. His admission also confirmed that he was in breach of the previously imposed suspended sentence.

As a result, Devine was sentenced to an additional two years and eight months in prison. The court also issued a restraining order to prevent any further contact with the victim. Judge Tim Gittins addressed Devine directly, stating, "You need to realize such cowardly behavior is never acceptable. The tide has turned somewhat in terms of the courts protecting those in abusive relationships."

During the hearing, Vic Laffey, representing Devine, noted that he had made efforts to address his issues while in custody, particularly his alcohol problem. Laffey emphasized that despite Devine's extensive criminal record, this was his first time in custody, and he expressed hope that it would be the last, asserting, "He assures me this is the first and last time he wants to be in custody."
