AIGARS BALSEVICS CONVICTED OF RAPE IN WISBECH
In a serious criminal case that has shocked the community of Wisbech, Aigars Balsevics, a 42-year-old former mayor of the town, has been found guilty of raping a woman inside her own home. The incident took place on the evening of May 24, 2021, and the repercussions of this case have resonated throughout the local area.According to court proceedings, Balsevics visited the victim’s residence in Wisbech on that particular day. Despite her clear distress and her repeated pleas for him to stop, he proceeded to commit the assault. The woman, who was crying and pleading for him to cease, was subjected to a brutal attack that left her shaken and traumatized. When she attempted to escape from the room, Balsevics allegedly prevented her from leaving, forcing her to endure a second, more violent rape.
Following the assault, the victim was understandably distressed and contacted two friends who arrived at her property shortly thereafter. Balsevics, who was present at the scene, then left the premises before authorities arrived. The woman promptly reported the incident to the police, providing detailed accounts of the assault. Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, and Balsevics was arrested in the early hours of May 25, 2021, the day after the attack.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, Balsevics, who resides on Burcroft Road in Wisbech, denied the charges of rape brought against him. His defense argued against the allegations, but the evidence presented in court was compelling. The case was heard at Peterborough Crown Court, where Balsevics faced two counts of rape. After a thorough trial, the jury returned a verdict of guilty on both charges on July 31.
As the legal process continues, Balsevics is scheduled to be sentenced at the same court on August 11. The conviction marks a significant development in the ongoing effort to address sexual violence and uphold justice for victims in Wisbech and beyond.
