EMIL DOPSON JAILED FOR 15 YEARS IN CAMBRIDGE AFTER OFFENDINGS IN WISBECH

In June 2014, Emil Dopson, aged 60, of The Keep, Kingston upon Thames, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for serious sexual offenses committed during the late 1990s when he was residing in Wisbech.

Dopson was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl and sexually abusing another girl, both school-age, during that period. The offences came to light after one of the victims contacted police in 2012, leading investigators to trace Dopson to an address in Surrey.

Following his arrest, Dopson faced multiple charges, including rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency with a child. He attempted to manipulate the situation by sending an email and letter to the victims’ relatives, trying to persuade them to drop the allegations—a move that was part of a broader effort to obstruct justice.

Dopson denied all charges but was ultimately convicted of 12 offences in a trial held in December of the previous year. These included two counts of indecent assault, two of gross indecency with a child, two of causing actual bodily harm, and perverting the course of justice concerning the letters.

He later appeared in court earlier this month for a re-trial on charges of rape and indecent assault, as the jury at the initial trial could not reach verdicts on these counts. The jury found Dopson guilty of the rape charge but acquitted him of the indecent assault.

He was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday. Detective Constable Amanda Sylvester commented on the case, stating, “Dopson is a violent man who preyed on young girls. He has shown no remorse for his actions and has continued to deny the offences, forcing the victims to relive their ordeals in court. One of the victims has told me she feels that she can now finally put this part of her life behind her and start to move on. Dopson is a sexual predator and clearly a danger to others. He now faces a lengthy period behind bars.”
