ABDI MOHAMMED SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR RAPE IN SOUTHAMPTON
A man identified as Abdi Mohammed has received a sentence of seven years in prison following a court verdict announced on Friday, 27 April. The sentencing was the culmination of a three-week trial held last month at Southampton Crown Court, where Mohammed, aged 21 and residing on Tennyson Road, was found guilty of an appalling criminal act involving a young woman.
The incident occurred on August 19, 2016, at a location in St Marys, Southampton.
The crime unfolded after the victim, an 18-year-old woman, had been out for an evening at Oceana nightclub.
During her night out with friends, she became separated from her group, leaving her in a vulnerable and isolated state outside the nightclub premises.
Seizing the opportunity, Abdi Mohammed approached her while she was alone and took advantage of her situation.
According to court findings, Mohammed persuaded her to get into a car that he drove to an address on Derby Road.
It was at this address that he subjected the woman to a sexual assault, raping her in what prosecutors described as a predatory act.
Following the assault, the young woman demonstrated remarkable bravery by escaping the address on foot.
She promptly sought help and became a key witness by reporting the attack to security staff at the Royal South Hants Hospital, located on Brintons Terrace.
The investigation into the assault was led by Hampshire Constabulary, which, through diligent detective work, managed to identify and apprehend Mohammed approximately a week later.
His arrest occurred in July 2017, and he was officially charged following the analysis of CCTV footage and forensic evidence that linked him to the crime scene.
Detective Inspector Toby Elcock expressed his thoughts on the case, highlighting the complexities involved.
He appreciated the victim's courage in coming forward and emphasized that without her support, bringing the offender to justice would not have been possible.
Inspector Elcock reinforced the police’s commitment to safeguarding residents and ensuring that Southampton remains a safe environment for nightlife.
He urged individuals to watch out for one another, avoid walking alone late at night, and plan their journeys home carefully, especially in situations where they might feel vulnerable.
Concluding his statement, Inspector Elcock hoped that the seven-year sentence would provide some closure for the victim and serve as a reassurance to the wider Hampshire community that justice has been served in this serious case of sexual assault.
