In January 2021, serious concerns arose regarding the conduct of William Kennedy, 36, and his brother Christopher Kennedy, 31, both residents of East Kilbride, amid allegations of sexual misconduct and online predatory behavior. William Kennedy was initially caught in a sting operation conducted by a paedophile hunting group, Child Protectors Scotland, in July of the previous year. The group’s members confronted him at his East Kilbride home, where they exposed his attempts to engage with what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. The footage from this confrontation shows William being questioned about his online conversations, which included explicit messages and the sending of a sexual image. During the exchange, William admitted to sending a picture of his penis, claiming it was a mistake, and attempted to justify his actions by saying the girl had recently turned 15. The group’s members pressed him on the seriousness of his conduct, highlighting the disturbing nature of his messages and intentions.

Further details reveal that William had been communicating with the decoy via adult dating sites, where he falsely claimed to be 34 years old from Scotland. He was in contact with the decoy through messaging platforms such as Kik and WhatsApp, where he exchanged sexual messages and photographs. The group’s intervention was prompted by their discovery of these conversations, which included plans to meet at Blantyre bus station for sexual activity. William later canceled these plans, citing an injury, but the evidence of his intent was clear. The police were called to the scene, and William was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

William Kennedy appeared before Hamilton Sheriff Court, where he admitted to multiple charges, including attempting to meet an underage girl for sex and sending explicit images. As part of his sentence, he was placed on a three-year supervision order, barred from having contact with any child under 16, and required to register as a sex offender for three years. The court also ordered that his mobile phone be confiscated and handed over to his mother, as concerns about his internet access persisted. These interactions included sending links to pornographic websites, sexual images, and a photograph of himself performing a sex act. Unbeknownst to him, he was communicating with members of the same paedophile hunting group, who later visited his East Kilbride home under the guise of a courier. The confrontation was streamed live online, capturing the shocked reaction of his mother as she answered the door. Christopher admitted to the charges, which involved attempting to indecently communicate with a minor and sending explicit material.

He was subsequently sentenced to a two-year supervision order and placed on the sex offenders’ register for two years. The court’s decision was made by Sheriff David Bicket in June, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the need for supervision. Both William and Christopher Kennedy’s cases highlight the ongoing issues of online grooming and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community groups in protecting vulnerable minors from exploitation.
