Febuary 2006 Pensioner jailed for 1970s child rapes A pensioner who raped two teenage girls more than three decades ago has been jailed for six years and nine months. William Grubb, 71, of Montrose, admitted carrying out the attacks on girls aged 14 and 16 in Angus and Aberdeenshire in the 1970s. Grubb, who walks with a stick, was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh on Friday. Judge Lord Carloway told Grubb: “It’s impossible for me to gauge what damage has been done to them (the girls).” The judge said: “You have pled guilty to the repeated rape of two girls who were between the ages of 14 and 16. “I take into account these offences were 30 years ago and that you are now an elderly man and in ill-health.” Admitted rape The judge added that if Grubb had gone to trial and been convicted of the charges he would have jailed him for nine years. The former farm worker was also put on the sex offenders’ register. Grubb previously admitted raping one victim between May 1972 and April 1974, and the second girl between May 1973 and May 1975. The court heard that some of the rapes took place at farm buildings where Grubb had worked. ‘No illusions’ Advocate depute Alastair Brown, for the Crown, said it was not possible to say how many times the victims had been raped, but it appeared to be a fairly regular occurrence. He said the offences came to light because of information received by the police. Defence counsel Mark Stewart, QC, said Grubb was “under no illusions” that his conduct deserved a prison sentence. He asked the judge to take into account Grubb’s lack of previous sexual offending and that his guilty pleas had saved the victims the ordeal of coming to court to give evidence.
