WILLIAM BALL FROM DEAL AND PRESTON SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES COMMITTED OVER 20 YEARS AGO

In a case that has spanned decades, William Ball, a 67-year-old man with a notorious reputation for his extensive tattoos, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for serious sexual offenses committed more than twenty years ago. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that has left a lasting impact on the victim, emphasizing the gravity of the crimes.

William Ball, who was residing in Deal at the time of the offenses, appeared before Canterbury Crown Court to face charges that included six counts of rape and eight counts of indecent assault. The trial prosecutor, Patricia Lees, described the case as a sustained campaign of sexual abuse, highlighting the severity and duration of the misconduct. The court was told that Ball’s actions had profoundly affected the victim, despite the incidents occurring many years in the past.

Ball, known for his heavily tattooed face and bald head, recounted his lifelong fascination with tattoos, revealing that he received his first tattoo at the age of 15 and continued to add to his body over the years. He claimed that at one point, he was recognized as the most tattooed man in England. His tattoos, he explained, were partly acquired during his time in Canada, where he was involved in circus work, which also involved tattooing his face and head.

Throughout his life, William Ball has experienced various occupations, including working in the pits, a career he abandoned after suffering an accident. He also worked as a postman but left that profession following a fall. His personal history includes multiple marriages, and he has a criminal record that includes convictions for shoplifting and poaching. At the time of sentencing, he was described as walking with the aid of two sticks, and his lawyer noted that he was on extensive medication, possibly due to health issues.

During the court proceedings, Ball admitted to having sexual relations with the victim but insisted that the encounters only occurred after she turned 16 and claimed that she had initiated the sexual acts. The court was also informed of his prior convictions, which added context to his character. Medical and psychiatric reports were presented, and Deborah Charles, representing the prosecution, stated that there was little room for mitigation given the nature of the offenses.

Judge Adele Williams, presiding over the case, sentenced William Ball to ten years in prison. In her remarks, she emphasized the vulnerability of the victim, describing her as a child who was corrupted by Ball’s actions, which included giving her money for sexual activity. The judge acknowledged that although the crimes took place over two decades ago, their effects persisted and had a lasting impact on the victim. She underscored the seriousness of the offenses, stating, “These remain very grave offences and must be punished accordingly.”

Furthermore, William Ball will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order and will be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life. He is also permanently banned from working with children, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of vulnerable individuals.
