WILLIAM ADAM FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR DECADES OF ABUSE AND RAPE
In a harrowing case that spanned over two decades, William Adam, a 45-year-old man from Darlington, has been convicted and sentenced for a prolonged campaign of violence, sexual assault, and coercive control against a woman who endured his abuse for more than 23 years.Adam’s pattern of brutality was both physical and sexual in nature.
His violent acts included raping the woman multiple times, physically assaulting her to the extent of breaking her ribs by stamping on her chest, and repeatedly threatening her with death or serious harm.
His aggression extended to physical assaults such as banging her head against a table after dragging her off a set of ladders, slapping her to cause a split lip, and forcing her to hand over money over the course of their tumultuous relationship.
The case was thoroughly investigated by Durham Constabulary, culminating in a two-year police inquiry.
Following this extensive investigation, Adam was found guilty of multiple serious charges, including rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The court proceedings revealed the extent of his brutality and the persistent nature of his abuse.
During a victim impact statement, the woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, expressed her pain and frustration.
She stated, “Adam will always profess his innocence – he truly believes he has done nothing wrong.
Now I hope he never gets the chance to do this to someone else – not just for me, but for every other woman or man out there who is scared to report their abuser.
This man has robbed me of memories I will never get back, because I have blocked so much out.” In addition to his conviction for the long-term abuse, Adam was also found guilty of common assault related to another woman after a seven-day trial held at Teesside Crown Court.
The court also heard that Adam’s mother, Mary Ballentine, aged 72 and also residing in Darlington, was convicted of perverting the course of justice.
She was found guilty of pressuring one of the women involved to retract her police statement, an act that obstructed justice.
William Adam was sentenced to a term of 10 years in prison for his crimes, reflecting the severity and duration of his abusive conduct.
His mother, Mary Ballentine, received a four-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months, as a consequence of her interference with the legal process.
This case highlights the devastating impact of long-term abuse and the importance of justice for victims who often suffer in silence for years.
The court’s decision aims to serve as a warning to those who commit such heinous acts and to support the ongoing fight against domestic violence and coercive control.
