WOMAN BEATER THREATENED TO BLOW UP VICTIM'S HOUSE

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard that Wesley Levis, who had previously assaulted the same victim leaving her with a fractured cheekbone has now been sentenced to 36 weeks in custody.

Levis, aged 35 and residing at Spring Bank Terrace, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and making threats to damage property.

District Judge Alexandra Preston said the offences were made more serious by the fact that Levis had been drinking heavily for two days prior to the attack.

"You have a history of violence against this victim, and you are clearly a domestic abuser," said Judge Preston during sentencing.

Prosecutor Kate Moore told the court that the victim described a long-standing pattern of abuse throughout their 11-year relationship.

“She said he was previously imprisoned for an assault that resulted in a fractured eye socket,” Miss Moore explained.

“On another occasion, he allegedly poured vodka over her and threatened to set her alight.” On the night in question, the victim had returned home after a night out when Levis awoke and became verbally aggressive.

“He demanded access to her phone, and when she refused, he threatened to slash her face with a piece of glass,” Miss Moore said.

“He also told her he would blow up the house and ordered her to leave, taking their one-year-old child with her.” Defence solicitor Gareth Price acknowledged his client’s troubling record and attributed much of his behaviour to alcohol dependency.

“He believed he was making progress in tackling his issues with alcohol, but this incident has served as a stark reminder,” said Mr Price.

“There is a young child involved, and he wishes to be a positive figure in that child's life.

“He has remained out of legal trouble for several years prior to this offence.”
