May 2021: To be released this month October 2015 Remorseless child rapist jailed for 14 years A remorseless child rapist who twice had sex with one stepdaughter and abused another as children has been jailed for 14 years. Jailing Wayne Jenkins (42) at Downpatrick Crown Court, Judge Piers Grant said he could not finish his sentencing “without praising the courage of both victims”. “These are difficult cases in any circumstances but they are even more difficult when people who have been abused at a young stage and indeed, far too frequently those who commit the abuse, rely on the vulnerability of the individuals in the hope and expectation that they will not come forward and they will not tell the world what has happened,” he said. “Victims will no longer automatically remain silent and they will be believed,” he said. After his trial in June, Jenkins, from Main Road in Portavogie, was unanimously convicted of two charges of rape and two of indecently assaulting one stepdaughter and a single count of indecently assaulting her sister on various dates between January 11, 2006 and September 1, 2008. They waived their right to anonymity so that the full facts of their ordeal can be reported. During his two-week trial, the jury heard how Jenkins raped his first victim when she was 12 years old after he forced her to perform a sex act on him and that he raped her again a few months later. The victim testified before the jury that afterwards, Jenkins said he “would bet I was the only one of my friends who wasn’t a virgin” and that his tone was as if that was “something to be proud of”. “I remember asking him what a virgin was and I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m only 12’,” she told the jury. She added she regretted not speaking out at the time. The jury also heard how he told her not to tell anyone what he had done, and if she did “he would go to jail”. The second victim, 15 at the time, gave evidence that he touched her around the breast area as she fell asleep. Jenkins denied doing anything wrong, labelling the girls as liars conspiring to “get me put away”. The jury heard how he labelled his rape victim, who developed an eating disorder as a result of his abuse, as being “off her rocker”, who “lived in fairyland.” Last month when he was to be sentenced, Jenkins was being led to the cells when he looked the girl he raped and told her “your time will come b***h”. Yesterday, Judge Grant told Jenkins – who reports state exhibited neither victim empathy nor remorse – he viewed that outburst as an aggravating factors “calculated to humiliate and threaten her”. Warning Jenkins that any further outbursts would be viewed seriously, Judge Grant told the paedophile his earlier threat was “not only disgraceful but further indicates your absence of remorse and wish to inflict further harm.” Other aggravating factors listed included the breach of trust as the girls’ stepfather, his high level of culpability, the repeated offending, the fact there were two victims, the significant age differences, their vulnerability, the added degradation of forcing one victim to perform a sex act on him and ongoing psychological harm. The judge further ordered that when released on licence, part of Jenkins’ supervised conditions will be counselling for alcohol abuse and treatment designed to minimise the risk as a sex offender. Judge Piers Grant said that he wanted witness statements recorded and that while he would hear submissions about the issue, he said both statements were “completely reprehensible and I intend to deal with it as a serious matter”. Mr Mallon submitted on the other hand that while the sexual abuse was a significant factor, it was not the only thing which led to the victim’s eating disorder. Remanding Jenkins back into custody, Judge Grant said he would impose sentence next week.
