WASIM BHAR AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN BIRMINGHAM AND CHELMSLEY WOOD

A 24-year-old man named Wasim Bhar has been sentenced to four years in prison following a disturbing incident involving sexual assault at a residential property in Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham.

Bhar, who was employed as a self-employed delivery driver for Hermes, committed this heinous act while attempting to deliver a parcel to a disabled woman’s home, an event that has left the victim traumatized and has raised serious concerns about the safety protocols within delivery services.

On a day in January, Bhar arrived at the woman’s residence in Chelmsley Wood, carrying the parcel he was assigned to deliver.

The victim, who was at home alone, described her encounter with Bhar in court, recounting that she initially accepted her package and moved it aside in her hallway.

According to her testimony, Bhar then made inappropriate remarks, stating, "I've seen you before.

I fancy you, love,” to which she responded firmly that she did not know him.

She described feeling shocked and vulnerable at that moment.

The woman continued to describe the disturbing sequence of events, explaining that Bhar asked if she was alone, to which she replied that someone else was in another room.

She noted that Bhar momentarily backed off but soon returned, grabbing her arm and then attempting to expose himself.

He proceeded to pull her t-shirt up, actions that caused her to panic and try to push him out of her home.

Despite her efforts, Bhar persisted, making further sexual advances and asking her to engage in sexual acts, all while she feared for her safety.

Frightened and overwhelmed, the victim attempted to defend herself and exit her home, but Bhar did not desist.

Her account emphasizes the level of fear and helplessness she experienced during the assault.

The police were eventually summoned, leading to an investigation that also involved inquiries with Hermes.

The investigation uncovered that Bhar had prior criminal convictions related to theft and dishonesty, which he had concealed when applying for his role as a courier.

Further evidence, including DNA analysis, established Bhar’s connection to the crime scene.

Although he initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming that nothing unusual occurred and that the woman was delusional, subsequent evidence proved otherwise.

Bhar admits that sexual contact took place but insists it was consensual—a claim strongly contested by the victim’s account and the evidence presented.

During the court hearing at Warwick Crown Court, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones addressed the gravity of the crime.

He emphasized that Bhar’s attack targeted a vulnerable individual, a woman with a disability who relies heavily on her sense of safety within her own home.

The judge highlighted that Bhar, working in a position of trust as a delivery driver, exploited this trust to commit a depraved act for his own sexual gratification.

The court noted with concern that Bhar's employment would likely not have been granted had his true character been known, given his history of dishonesty.

The judge condemned the sexual assault, stressing that it represented a severe breach of trust and an abuse of the woman’s sanctuary.

He pointed out that Bhar showed no remorse for his actions.

Although Bhar has no prior sexual offense convictions, his history of theft and dishonesty was considered relevant and concerning.

A victim impact statement was read aloud during the sentencing, where the complainant expressed how the assault has permanently damaged her sense of safety at home, stating, “My home was all I had, and was my safe place.

Since this thing happened to me, it’s not my safe place anymore because of this man.” Bhar's legal representative, Jasvir Mann, argued that the victim has a right to feel secure in her own home and acknowledged the jury’s verdict.

While Bhar maintains he does not admit to the crime, he recognizes that he has been found guilty and that punishment is forthcoming.

In light of all these factors, the court sentenced Wasim Bhar to four years of imprisonment and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life.

The case underscores the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and raises questions about employment screening processes within courier companies like Hermes.
