VIRA HUSSAINI AND THE HORRIFIC RAPE IN BRADFORD

A woman from Bradford has spoken out about her ongoing pain and suffering following a traumatic sexual assault that occurred in 2018.

She described her emotional turmoil, including the countless tears she has shed and the persistent nightmares that have haunted her for years.

This woman’s ordeal culminated in the sentencing of Vira Hussaini, aged 35, who was recently convicted of the heinous crime.

Last week, at Leeds Crown Court, Hussaini was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of raping the woman during the terrifying incident.

The attack left her with severe injuries, both physically and emotionally.

In the aftermath of her sentencing, the victim shared her story with YorkshireLive, revealing that while she now receives support from her family and friends, the emotional scars of the assault remain deeply embedded in her daily life.

She recounted the assault, stating, "He held me down by my wrists and raped me.

He tore me, causing bleeding, which led me to seek support from the health sector.

I was worried about the safety of other women and built up the courage to report him to the police in August 2019." Despite her efforts to seek justice, she expressed disappointment, remarking, "We all thought he would have been given a longer sentence, however we are grateful that a level of justice has been served after many years suffering in silence." In her detailed victim impact statement, she described the profound effects the attack has had on her well-being.

She admitted to struggling with her appetite, oscillating between loss of hunger and emotional overeating.

Concerned about her sexual health, she was worried about the possibility of infections, but was relieved to receive medical clearance.

Her emotional health has deteriorated, as she confessed to crying frequently when thoughts of the assault surface, and suffering from vivid nightmares involving sexual abuse, sometimes hearing herself scream in her sleep.

She also described episodes of panic, including sensations akin to heart palpitations.

The woman, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, shared that she had to undergo invasive procedures, including photographs taken of her genitals, which she felt diminished her dignity.

"I feel that I have no privacy left and I am embarrassed that so many strangers from the court process are now aware of my personal matters," she said.

She acknowledged that the stigma surrounding rape is something she must cope with permanently and expressed her feelings of social withdrawal, stating, "I have become more insular over the past few years because I no longer feel confident or safe, which has left me feeling socially isolated at times.

This has also impacted my loved ones, who have seen me cry and struggle through the support I rely on." Despite the trauma, she has engaged in various forms of support, including counselling, reiki, group therapy, and consulting an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA).

She reflected, "The past four and a half years have been immensely stressful and exhausting, consuming a lot of my energy and time as I try to process this trauma." Looking back, she expressed regret that Hussaini did not admit responsibility earlier, which could have expedited her path to justice and closure.

Instead, she endured the lengthy court process, fighting to have her voice heard.

Her emotional expression culminated in a poignant analogy: "Overall, what I am really trying to say is, I have air in my lungs, but feel like I can't breathe.

And I have a heart that works, but feels broken.

I now plan to rebuild myself and not allow this man to destroy me any further." This case highlights the devastating impact of sexual violence and the ongoing struggle faced by survivors, who often endure years of pain before justice is ultimately served.
