VINCENT ROBERTS SENTENCED TO 5.5 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER SEXUAL OFFENCES ON ISLE OF WIGHT
A man named Vincent Roberts, originally from Jersey, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison following his conviction for multiple sexual offences committed on the Isle of Wight.Roberts was discovered working at a convenience store in Newport before authorities took him into custody, and the case has garnered considerable attention due to the serious nature of his crimes.
The events span a troubling series of betrayals of trust and abuse of vulnerable individuals.
Roberts, aged 57, was found guilty at trial in February of eight counts of engaging in prohibited acts with individuals suffering from mental disorders.
These offences occurred during his employment on the island and involved a disturbing pattern of misconduct against patients and vulnerable persons.
Prior to his arrest, Vincent Roberts was employed as a healthcare assistant at a psychiatric facility on Jersey.
It was during this period, specifically starting in June 2020, that Roberts commenced inappropriate communications with a female patient.
Initially, he used text messaging to contact her, but he soon switched to Snapchat, a social media platform known for its message disappearing feature, which he presumably believed would conceal their conversations.
Over time, the exchanges grew increasingly inappropriate, culminating in physical contact, including multiple instances where Roberts kissed the mentally unwell patient.
The misconduct did not end there.
During 2020, Roberts extended his inappropriate interactions to a second female patient.
He initially communicated with her via TikTok, another social media app, before moving the conversation to Snapchat.
Over subsequent weeks and months, Roberts engaged in sexual activities with this second patient, further compounding his illegal actions.
The misconduct was eventually uncovered when a staff member disclosed the incidents, prompting a Safeguarding Adult Alert to be raised with the Adult Safeguarding Team.
This led to Roberts’s arrest in January 2021.
During the investigation, Roberts chose not to cooperate and, in an attempt to evade justice, left Jersey and fled to the Isle of Wight.
It was not until August 2022 that Hampshire Constabulary located Roberts on the Isle of Wight.
He was subsequently arrested and handed over to the authorities from Jersey, who transported him back to Jersey.
Roberts appeared in court the following day to face the charges.
At the time of his arrest, Roberts was working as the manager of Central’s convenience store located on Hunnyhill in Newport.
His position made his crimes all the more disturbing, given the trust placed in him by his employer and the community.
Detective Constable Carla Garnier commented on the case, stating, “This was a long and complex investigation into how Roberts abused his position of trust with vulnerable people for his own gratification.
He tried to evade justice by leaving the Island, and I am thankful that he was apprehended, brought back to Jersey, and was found guilty.” She emphasized the impact on the victims, noting, “Roberts’ actions have had a hugely negative impact on both victims in this case.
They have both been and continue to be supported by Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (IDSVAs) and Adult Mental Health services.” Garnier also reaffirmed the commitment of authorities to pursue justice, saying, “We are committed to investigating and prosecuting all sexual offenders and want to assure victims that there are a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance through all stages of the criminal justice process.” In addition to his prison sentence, Roberts has been placed on the Sex Offender Register for a decade and has been subject to an indefinite restraining order, further restricting his contact with victims and the community.
His case highlights the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals from predators who abuse their positions of trust in various settings, including healthcare and retail environments.
