March 2011 Mum’s ‘disgust’ at paedophile’s sentence THE mother of a girl who was abused by a paedophile in village near Taunton has spoken of her ‘disgust’ over his ‘light sentence’. Trevor Loveridge, 68, of no fixed address, was jailed for four years for sexual offences against two girls under 16, as reported in the County Gazette last week. The mother of one of the girls, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said: “I think the sentence is disgusting. “He got four years, which means he will be out in two, yet he ruined their life. I just don’t see how it works as a justice system. I did not expect such a light sentence.” She described the moment her daughter broke down in tears to reveal what she called ‘the worst secret in the world’. She said: “I thought ‘How did I not know? How did I not protect my daughter?’” The mother described how the experience changed her child from a ‘bubbly and happy-go-lucky girl’ to someone who is withdrawn and struggles to trust others. “I saw behaviour changes but never understood why. She would have tan-trums then level out again. I just put it down to her being a teenager.” Her daughter is now trying to rebuild her life while receiving treatment for depression. “She’s been left with a life-time emotional scar, I’m extremely grateful she’s held on.”
