TOMASZ CHMIELEWSKI'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN MIDDLESBROUGH: PAEDOPHILE'S SICKENING IMAGE COLLECTION AND SURVEILLANCE ACTIVITIES

In February 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Tomasz Chmielewski, a man from Middlesbrough who was found to possess an extensive collection of indecent images and had engaged in voyeuristic activities targeting women and girls in the town centre.

The case highlighted the severity of his actions and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat such heinous crimes.

Chmielewski, aged 41, was discovered to have nearly 2,000 indecent images stored on his electronic devices, with over 600 classified as Category A, indicating the most serious level of abuse material.

The police investigation also uncovered a video and photographs he had taken of an unsuspecting teenage girl during a trip to the Lake District, further illustrating his predatory behavior.

His appearance at Teesside Crown Court on a Monday marked a significant step in the legal process, where he faced charges of voyeurism, possession of indecent images, and possession of prohibited images of children.

Throughout the proceedings, Chmielewski required the assistance of a Polish interpreter, underscoring his non-native English-speaking background.

The charges against him spanned from April 26, 2018, to August 5 of the previous year.

The case was initiated after police raided his home on Lanchester Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, last August, following a referral from the National Crime Agency.

Upon arrival, Chmielewski readily admitted responsibility, stating that the images were stored on his mobile phone.

His cooperation was described as 'unusually candid' by officers.

Following his arrest, all electronic devices were seized, revealing a disturbing collection of images.

During police interviews, Chmielewski confessed to having a sexual attraction to girls aged between 13 and 15, admitting that he had been accessing such indecent material for approximately ten years.

He also admitted to recording women and girls in Middlesbrough and keeping these recordings for his own viewing.

One of the victims was a teenage girl whom Chmielewski recorded and photographed while in the Lake District.

Although he acknowledged sharing some images, authorities found no evidence to suggest he distributed them.

His admissions painted a picture of a man with a long-standing pattern of voyeuristic and exploitative behavior.

In mitigation, solicitor Sean Smith emphasized that Chmielewski recognized the gravity of his crimes and expressed remorse.

Smith highlighted that the defendant had made full admissions and was aware of his problematic behavior.

He also pointed out the potential impact of a custodial sentence on Chmielewski’s family, including his partner, who might have to relocate, and a child he financially supports in Poland.

Judge Jonathan Carroll, presiding over the case, acknowledged the seriousness of the offenses and the troubling nature of the evidence.

Despite having no previous convictions, Chmielewski was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.

The court also mandated that he undertake 40 days of rehabilitation activities, complete a sex offender treatment program, and register as a sex offender for the next decade.

Additionally, he was subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, aimed at protecting the community from further harm.
