TOM BLACK OF STOCKTON-ON-TEES SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL ABANDONMENT IN EAGLESCLIFFE

Thomas John Black, born on 13 January 1995 and residing on Laurel Road, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees TS16 0BD, was convicted in 2019 after leaving his pet cat behind when he moved out of his home.

Black pleaded guilty to three charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 in a case brought by the RSPCA. He had abandoned his helpless cat, Cass, in an unclean, abandoned flat with no access to food or water.

RSPCA inspector Clare Wilson described the scene: “The house was filthy, with faeces and urine everywhere and rubbish strewn across every room. Cass had no access to food or water and, in addition, had serious veterinary needs.” She explained that Cass had a history of seizures, which Black was aware of and knew required treatment, yet he chose to move out and leave her behind.

Black left Cass alone in an empty property, effectively abandoning her to starve. In court, it was noted that Black had been experiencing a difficult period and had recently moved back in with family members.

Cass has now been transferred to the care of the RSPCA in hopes of being rehomed. Inspector Wilson emphasized: “I am seeing more and more abandonment cases like this. Abandoning an animal in this way is completely unacceptable. If you're unable to care for your pet, you must arrange for a responsible person to look after them in your absence.”

Regarding sentencing, Black received a 12-month community order, was required to complete 25 rehabilitation days, ordered to pay £300 in costs and an £85 victim surcharge, and was disqualified from owning animals for ten years.
