TIMOTHY SMITH FROM WREXHAM SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES AND GROOMING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
In August 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Timothy Smith, a man from Wrexham, who engaged in heinous acts of child exploitation through social media.Smith, a married father of three, used the Whisper app to contact a 13-year-old girl, adopting the alias 'Daddy' as part of his grooming strategy.
His interactions with the young girl involved exchanging explicit messages, which created a disturbing dynamic of manipulation and predatory behavior.
Smith's grooming extended beyond online communication.
He took the girl for a walk with his dog, during which they held hands and shared kisses, further establishing a false sense of trust and intimacy.
However, the situation took a darker turn when Smith invited her to his parents' house, which was unoccupied at the time.
There, he committed a sexual assault against her, an act that marked a significant escalation in his criminal conduct.
While engaging in these activities with the first girl, Smith was also grooming a second young girl.
He told her she was beautiful and made her feel special, describing her as a princess.
His manipulative tactics included persuading her to send nude photographs and even attempting to arrange for her to leave school so he could have a sexual encounter with her, explicitly suggesting she could 'lose her virginity' to him.
The criminal activities came to light when the first girl confided in her friends about Smith.
Concerned, her friends informed her mother, who then reported the matter to the police.
Smith was subsequently arrested, and during questioning, he chose to respond with a 'no comment' to all inquiries, indicating a refusal to cooperate with investigators.
At Mold Crown Court, Judge Niclas Parry addressed the court, emphasizing the dangers posed by social media platforms like Whisper.
He described the case as exemplifying the 'real danger of social media' and called it 'the worst fear of parents.' The court was shown evidence of Smith's disturbing interest in children, including images of child abuse stored on his electronic devices.
The judge condemned Smith for his complete disregard for the feelings and well-being of his victims.
One of the victims was so distressed by the abuse and the presence of explicit photographs of her that she contemplated self-harm.
The court also heard from Smith's defense lawyer, Robin Boag, who revealed that Smith was under significant stress at the time of the offenses.
Boag mentioned that Smith's wife had left him and that he was facing the imminent loss of his job.
He argued that Smith had been under pressure for two years while the case was pending.
Ultimately, Judge Parry sentenced Smith to six years and nine months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, with a lifetime order in place to prevent any further sexual harm.
Smith, residing on Turner Close in Wrexham, had previously admitted to multiple charges, including two counts of sexual communication with a child, three counts of sexual activity with a child, inciting a child to engage in sexual acts, and attempting to arrange a child sex offense.
He also pleaded guilty to downloading numerous images of children, including 20 Category A images, 28 Category B images, and 108 Category C images, along with possessing four prohibited images of children.
Two charges related to causing a child to watch a sexual act were left on his file, as he denied those allegations.
This case underscores the ongoing dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilance among parents and guardians to protect children from predators operating through social media platforms.
