August 2010 Former mayor abused girl, 6 AN ex-mayor of Wilton has admitted indecently assaulting a six-year-old girl. Timothy Abbott, 55, of Race Plain Road, Wilton, pleaded guilty at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday to two counts of indecent assault of a child under the age of 13. The assaults happened between June 30, 1980 and August 1, 1983 when he was babysitting for a family he was friendly with. The girl involved, now 34, who cannot be named due to the nature of the offence, reported Abbott to police in December last year. He will reappear before the court on October 15 for sentencing. Judge John Dixon said his bail condition – to not have unsupervised contact with any girl under the age of 13 – would continue and he would need to sign the sex offenders’ register. Abbott, who is currently a town councillor and was mayor from 1995 to 1996, put his name forward to be mayor of Wilton this year, but was not selected. At the time of the incidents, in 1983, Abbott stood in the general election against Robert Key. The eccentric 27-year-old stood for the ‘Don’t Know Party’ and appeared in the Journal in a djelaba smock with a traffic cone on his head after getting 86 votes. He stood for Parliament again in 1992, as an Independent, but polled just 0.2 per cent of the votes. Married Abbott, who trained as a psychiatric nurse and was also a social worker in Salisbury, has been a town councillor for many years. The Journal contacted Wiltshire Council, which would be responsible for investigating any complaints of a breach of the members’ code of conduct by a town councillor. The council said that they had received no complaint under the code of conduct about Abbott. Any complaint would need to demonstrate the national code of conduct had been breached for it to be upheld. The Journal understands that even if Abbott received a prison sentence, he would not necessarily lose his seat on the town council.
