THOMAS GROOM FROM NORTHAMPTON SENTENCED FOR PREDATORY SEX OFFENCES IN MANCHESTER

In May 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Thomas Groom, a 23-year-old man originally from Northampton, who was convicted of a series of serious sexual offences against minors.

The court heard how Groom, who was residing in Manchester at the time, engaged in a manipulative and predatory campaign targeting young girls through social media platforms, including Snapchat and WhatsApp.

Groom’s actions spanned over several years, during which he communicated with at least seven girls, some as young as under 16.

His initial interactions appeared friendly, but they quickly escalated into threatening and coercive behavior.

One of the victims, a girl under 16, recounted how Groom initially claimed to be 17 and began to build a rapport with her.

However, his tone soon shifted to intimidation, as he threatened to post her explicit images on porn websites unless she agreed to meet him in Manchester.

He persistently pressured her to send nude photographs, which she eventually did out of fear.

Groom’s threats intensified when he revealed that he had saved all her images and intended to distribute them online unless she complied with his demands.

After she blocked him on Snapchat, Groom resorted to calling her on the phone, which left her terrified.

Her mother, who became involved, managed to track Groom down on social media and retrieved some of the messages he had sent.

These messages, along with the phone calls—some as frequent as 30 times in a matter of minutes—were handed over to the police.

During police investigations, Groom initially refused to provide his PIN, but subsequent examination of his phone uncovered further offences involving six other children.

Three of these victims have been identified and contacted by authorities, while the remaining three remain untraceable.

Evidence showed that Groom had sent indecent images to another girl under 16 via WhatsApp and had attempted to persuade her to come to Manchester for a meeting.

Further allegations revealed Groom had met up with another underage girl for sexual activity after grooming her through social media.

He also exchanged sexual messages with yet another girl, demanding photographs in return, and repeatedly asked to meet for sex, even offering to pay her train fare.

One victim, who blocked him after persistent requests, was threatened with self-harm unless she agreed to meet him.

Statements read aloud in court by prosecutor Mark Monaghan detailed the profound impact Groom’s actions had on the victims.

One mother described her daughter as being left ‘traumatised,’ while others spoke of feelings of guilt, social withdrawal, sleep difficulties, and avoidance of Manchester.

The court heard that some victims now experience ongoing emotional distress and social isolation.

Groom’s defense lawyer, Khadim Al’Hassan, acknowledged that Groom, who had no prior convictions, had admitted guilt from the outset and expressed remorse.

He argued that Groom was genuinely sorry for his actions.

However, Judge Stuart Driver QC was less sympathetic, describing Groom as a young man who appeared to feel sorry for himself rather than showing true remorse.

In sentencing, Judge Driver condemned Groom as a “predatory, manipulative and persistent sexual offender against girls.” He highlighted the particularly heinous nature of the offence involving the girl Groom met in Manchester, noting the threats to distribute her images on child sex porn sites as especially aggravating.

The judge emphasized that the offences were not merely online but had real, damaging consequences on the victims’ lives.

Groom pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges, including causing or inciting a child into sexual activity, attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act, meeting a child following sexual grooming, and possession of indecent images of children.

The court also imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and mandated that Groom register as a sex offender for life.

Groom’s address was listed as Gervase Square, Northampton, at the time of sentencing, marking a significant case of online grooming and exploitation with lasting repercussions for the victims involved.
